A Little Bit About Me...

As a student in Health Science, i.e. Medical Technology, I worked in a genetics laboratory for 14 years learning lab instrumentation, trouble-shooting, cytogenetics and professional etiquette. Lectures as well as public presentations of newly discovered genetic abnormalities was my passion. I truly enjoyed preparing and presenting these exciting talks. I decided to change careers and look into the education field. I have been working on obtaining my Alternative Teaching License and will complete my coursework for this by the end of May, 2011. I have been a teacher's assistant for the past 2 and 1/2 years in kindergarten classes, one of which is a bi-lingual class.

My philosophy for effective education is comprised of six components creativity, character, culture, civic capacity, shared governance and student centeredness. I believe student centeredness is the trunk and the other components are the branches. Each component is connected to the other and they share common characteristics. For me teaching is about making the connection for students between the literature, writing, piece of art or media and their lives. A Little Bit About Me...

My two and half years of teaching math and physics in high school as well as 8 years of college teaching taught me a great deal about encouraging learning. I also believe that my ability to communicate makes me especially well suited to help students achieve academically. My experiences dramatically improved and expanded my communication skills since I was constantly meeting new people and discussing different topics. I have been a substitute and long-term substitute in SFPS since Oct., 2009. This has been a real eye-opener about the American public schools.
