Mary W - Dubuque, IA 52001 (25.9 mi) - SAT - Verbal Tutor - $34.00/hr.
I especially enjoy working one-on-one with students because I am able to concentrate on his/her weaknesses. I like to use manipulatives and concrete examples whenever possible. After introducing a concept I work out examples with the student, then have him/her work through several examples while I watch and, finally, have the student work independently on a set of problems. If there are still errors I try to approach the concept from a different perspective and then repeat the process. I have taught mathematics in grades 3 through college. I especially enjoy working with high school students and college algebra and trigonometry students. Since my retirement from college teaching I have been tutoring at Sylvan Learning, teaching some grade school math, algebra, geometry and ACT prep.

I apply an organized and clearly constructive approach to learning, and believe that making lessons as interesting as possible is key. As I've worked with many learning styles, I've come to see that the hands-on approach (global kinesthetic) , or "doing' is most affective. I love teaching, and want my student(s) to feel comfortable in asking questions, asking for clarification, and practicing skills. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and a voracious love of learning. Every subject in the Humanities held a fascination for me, and to this day, I read two books a week, write, draw, and study educational Psychology. years after my graduation, i earned my Secondary Teacher of E
