To help them, I needed to review their texts, and find out the tools available to them. When teaching, you need feedback. When teaching mathematics, you might test a student, challenging them to solve a problem. If you have failed to communicate, then you may need to explore other modes of communication. Some students appreciate visual explanations. Other students work better with symbols or abstractions. When teaching one on one, you can take the time to find out what works best for that student.
