Helping students learn and learn how to grow

I like students to be comfortable, enjoy their experiences with me as much as possible, and learn not only the material they need to study, but also habits and practices that will help them with future studies.
My teaching experience is broad across subjects and age levels. Learning and teaching excite me and I like to think that attitude rubs off on my students. It can be fun to learn, and even those subjects a student does not find enjoyable, can prove satisfying. I've taught middle school and high school, as well as at Bellevue College, Renton technical College, and North Seattle Community College. My own experiences include not just teaching, but also professional broadcasting, journalism (both broadcast and print newswriting, creative writing, editing, and reporting), writing a book, supervising employees as well as students, and poetry awards.

A Little Bit About Me...

With nearly a lifetime of teaching youth and adult learners, I have focused on teaching computer skills in the more recent period of my career. Computer skills include the physical use of the PC (personal computer) and Microsoft Office software—Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Windows. In my classes, I also included the teaching of good writing skills for my students to use in writing their term papers. Other subject proficiencies include psychology, sociology, math-statistics, history, physics and library skills.
I taught to engage the audio, visual and kinesthetic capabilities of each student in the learning process. I encouraged note taking by creating handout outlines of the information being covered and students inserted notes into each section of the outlines and I used physical objects to demonstrate how computer systems work and students took apart, put together and troubles ... read more

I believe that instilling the confidence to learn is the key to effective instruction. Students need confidence not only in their instructor’s mastery of the subject matter, but also in their own ability to gain their own such master. This is not to suggest that rigor should not be applied, but rather that a student must have an emotional engagement with the learning process and a sense of their own progress, however minimal it might seem at a particular time. Frustration is the primary obstacle to successful learning and overcoming it is the instructor’s chief task.

A Little Bit About Me...

I knew I wanted to teach at grade 5. All my education from that time on was directed to become a teacher. During my graduate work at the University of Oregon I majored in Reading. It has become my passion to help all students love reading and become comfortable reading. This passion has been driven by the fact that I am dyslexic and understand how difficult it is to not be able to read well. During my teaching career I have worked with all grades and developmental levels. My Resume is a much better indicator of my experience along with meeting me in person.
I believe that all children can learn you just have to find their style. Each person has their own unique learning style. That is why tutoring can truely help students become better learners because a one on one approach can help them find their style and become their own advocates.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style embraces an atmosphere of inclusion. It provides for active student engagement on a daily basis. Students communicated to me that I have been an inspiration to them: my mentoring has helped them believe in themselves and further their intellectual goals. And, on last quarter’s instructor evaluation forms, students reveal that "[I am] reliable, prepared, involved, accessible." My joy for teaching that I instantaneously display to students contributes to students’ growing interest in various cultures, issues of global magnitude and multiple perspectives; students’ desire to express their voice as global learners; and the enhancement of students’ civic engagement and social responsibility. My four years of college-level teaching experience reveals my genuineness and resourcefulness – something that my Winter 2006 teaching observation clearly entails: "I was consisten ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that every student can learn, given the right approach. Sometimes the "right approach" requires explaining the concept in several different ways, or includes a more interactive process with experimentation or discussion. I try to work with each student to find the correct approach. In addition, I believe that one of the most important parts of tutoring is giving the student confidence in their own abilities, and I try to provide as much encouragement as possible.
I graduated in May 2009 with a BS in Engineering from Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, a prestigious technical school in Needham, Massachusetts.
