I have alot of experience working with people with disabilites from severe Mental Retardation, Cerebal Palsy,Autism, Learning Disability and Mental Heath. I have obtained a degree from Herkimer College in applied science with a minor in education. I also went to Mohawk Valley Community College for two years to obtain a degree in Nursing. I try to involve as many senses as I can when illustrating new concepts and ideas. Math manipulatives are essential elements for early math comprehension. Whenever a game can help solidify ideas, it is utilized and learning is always fun. Children reach benchmarks, such as reading independently and math computation at different rates, so it's important to be consistent but very patient and encouraging. A solid reading foundation is the greatest gift our children can receive. Comprehension is a key factor to understanding any subject at all.
Prior to homeschooling my six children, I worked as a Research Assistant at the Schriner's Burn Institute in Boston, and then at Darmouth College Medical School in Hanover, NH. I have put a lot of thought and effort into my teaching style. I love teaching and love working with all types of students. I am a professional singer, actress and dancer who has taught throughout my 15 year career. I truly love teaching, especially in a one-on-one or very small group setting. Currently I teach private lessons in: piano, voice and acting. I also teach small-group: Piano, Acting, Choir, Learn to Read Music, Creative Movement, Pilates, Boot Camp, Kick Boxing. I also work with the local home school community as a 'tutor' for math and English.
I believe in mentoring. It does take a few times for the student (young and old) to understand that I cannot teach them anything. I can present information to them and attempt to inspire them to learn, but they are the ones who ultimately teach themselves.
