I apply an organized and clearly constructive approach to learning, and believe that making lessons as interesting as possible is key. As I've worked with many learning styles, I've come to see that the hands-on approach (global kinesthetic) , or "doing' is most affective. I love teaching, and want my student(s) to feel comfortable in asking questions, asking for clarification, and practicing skills.

I am patient, a good listener, and I have the ability to explain the same concept in many different ways. I have also had the opportunity to grasp the attention of a student whom everyone considered troublesome, that student needed time and patience, and I gladly gave it to him. I have twenty-five years experience teaching at the college level. My areas of expertise are Sociology, Criminology, and Legal Studies but my favorite part of teaching is working one-on-one with students on research and writing projects. In recognition of my expertise in this area, my university awarded me the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research Mentoring in 2007. I have published and reviewed for academia journals and have experience writing and reviewing grant applications. Last year I left my tenured job to move to Wisconsin to be with my family and to develop an independent consulting business. But I really miss teaching! I would love to work with students who need a little extra help finding their voice.

I primarily teach through activities and ideas suited to meet each individual's need. Through the interpersonal contact and motivation I provide, I feel that I help the student to desire to improve their knowledge and perform better. Depending on the student, I can be an enthusiastic or a calm teacher. By taking courses such as child psychology, I am able to understand which teaching methods and interaction styles work best for each person. I think the best method of teaching is doing practice problems and hands-on work as well as addressing problems expressed by each student.

More About This Tutor...

At Harvard University, for five years, I taught expository writing to first year students, focusing on critical thinking skills, the foundation of essay and argument. One of my classes was remedial. I'm a veteran award-winning journalist with nationally-known newspapers and a former Nieman Fellow in Journalism at Harvard, currently completing a novel. I'm particularly adept at working with students with special needs and learning differences.
I ascertain the student's strengths and weaknesses and teach how to draw upon strengths to improve writing. I give detailed feedback throughout the writing process. I measure success by the student's increased confidence.
