A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is a very flexible style. I understand that everyone has a different method for learning and I have to adapt in order for the student to learn. Since I've mostly dealt with music for teaching experience, I'll refer to that area of expertise to illustrate my methods. I usually start off with ear training exercises because as a musician this is a must have skill. Then we go over basic aspects of music such as rhythm or basic chords. Eventually, after enough has been learned, I make the class more challenging and try to get the student to think in many different ways and allow them to be flexible with their minds as well.
I am a musician and teacher at heart and within the past two years I have found a way to combine those two passions into the most rewarding job I've ever had. I've been teaching music lessons, usually with guitar, for well over a year now and I love ... read more

More About This Tutor...

My passion for education blossomed while volunteering as a tutor with Somali refugee children in Pittsburgh, PA during college. I worked with families in their homes to develop English reading, writing, and speaking skills. After graduating with a B.A. in History and Political Science I joined Teach For America, where I taught first grade for two years and substitute taught pre-kindergarten through fifth grade for one year. A major focus while teaching first grade was developing literacy skills and instilling a love and enthusiasm for reading and writing in my students.
The most important thing about my teaching style is that I believe every child can achieve academic excellence and can be interested in learning. I believe that it is up to me, as a teacher or a tutor, to engage the student(s). A huge part of this is being very transparent about where the student starts, what our go ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy helping people to learn. Aside from knowledge base expertise, certain qualities exemplify a good tutor: patience and being a good listener. Understanding a student’s learning strategies is foundational and incorporates good listening qualities. A desirable outcome will then be more achievable for the student. I try to let my student, regardless of age/grade, not feel intimidated or unintelligent regarding a certain subject or problem. This subsequently allows him or her to open up and feel comfortable as we work together to solve the problem. I encourage students to focus and have a positive attitude. Hopefully, developing good, solid study habits will result, not only while being tutored, but thereafter at home and school.
I have a BS in Biological Sciences and an MS in Biology. I have also worked in the science research environment for many years, including providing inp ... read more
