English ESOL is one of my top subjects! Taught English ESOL in Japan for four years, working with students from toddler to senior citizen.

I have a fairly relaxed style, though I am flexible and can adjust to whatever will make the student(s) most comfortable.
I worked as an ESL teacher in Japan for almost four years teaching people of all ages, from toddlers to senior citizens. I have solid teaching and tutoring experience in both classroom and a one on one scenario. I taught English for a private academy in South Korea to children ages K-12 and also tutored adults one on one. After completing my contract in South Korea I returned to graduate school in order to earn a master’s degree in Business Administration at Ohio University. I choose Ohio as they offered me a half scholarship, due to my writing ability, and the opportunity to work in the Professional Writing Center for the College of Business. At this position I was able to tutor college age students, foreign and domestic, to improve their English writing ability.

A Little Bit About Me...

It is my belief that teaching truly works only in partnership with learning. My preferred approach to teaching is to start by finding out about students' needs and interests to help them develop and meet their goals. By planning out what students have to learn and showing how these things can lead to what they want, teachers bring students into the process of taking responsibility for their own education. Finally, accepting responsibility for their own education allows students to become life-long learners, which improves their ability to adapt and change with future challenges.
I have worked with students of almost every age and level. My first teaching degree was a Bachelor's in Early Childhood Education. With that degree, I worked in a preschool, and I have substituted extensively in elementary schools and in middle and high schools for 12 years, learning to work with math ... read more

I present the information or concepts at hand in several different ways. I draw on the learners personal experiences to make the information or concepts relevant to them. I help the learner tie the information or concepts to their own knowledge base thus establishing ownership.
I tutored for the Federal Way, WA campus of DeVry University from spring of 2007 to fall of 2008. I tutored students in English, multiple maths, programming, game design, logic, and test prep. I stopped tutoring to devote my time to the final project of my degree. What strikes me most as I look back at my education is how much of an impact a teacher can have when they make their subject relevant to their students. When I am teaching I try to find out what motivates each student as a person, in addition to what is motivating them to take the class. My goal is to find a way to present the material in such a way that the experience of learning is a journey of meaningful discovery that corresponds to the course content.
While completing my BS in engineering, I spent two years tutoring math, physics, and optics. During my senior year I was also able to teach a portion of two terms of the freshman optics class. During the last four years I have worked as an aerospace engineer, and as a private contractor. Although these weren't teaching positions, I believe that these experiences have given me unique opportunities to share my knowledge and wi ... read more

I try to avoid giving students an answer immediately, but rather try to pry the answer out of them with questions so that they can figure out the answer themselves. I see teaching as helping/forcing the student to think things out and make discoveries for themselves, not just being spoon-fed information. Of course, sometimes it is necessary to tell students the answer if all else fails (after all, it is important that learning is not a frustrating activity for the student), and rote memorization can be a valuable tool every now and then. Above all else, I would describe my style as being patient and trying to allow the student to have fun and be interested in the topic under study.
