English ESOL is one of my top subjects! Taught English ESOL in Japan for four years, working with students from toddler to senior citizen.

I worked as an ESL teacher in Japan for almost four years teaching people of all ages, from toddlers to senior citizens. The opportunity to live in Japan, coupled with study in university has also given me an intermediate level of Japanese. In high school I also had a position as an assistant teacher at a karate dojo, working with large groups of children of all ages. Additionally, having studied and/or worked in Japan, the UK, New Zealand and most recently Australia, I have familiarity interacting with people from wide ethnic, cultural and linguistic backgrounds and can alter my teaching style accordingly.
I have a fairly relaxed style, though I am flexible and can adjust to whatever will make the student(s) most comfortable.

A Little Bit About Me...

I often work with students who struggle learning in the conventional classroom. I love to see my students achieve and be excited about what they accomplish. My tutoring style is to listen to the student to discover the root of the problem that is blocking learning. Understanding the student, their frustrations, and their learning style is crucial to assisting them. Discovering what methods work best with each student can become key. Making the subject real and applicable to their world also brings great results. I never under estimate the effect of enthusiasm and a since of self-confidence to boost learning, and strive to bring both to the experience.
I have 25 years of experience as a classroom teacher. I have also taught students in small group and 1 to 1 settings. I have a passion for education. My current teaching certificates are in Elementary Education, Physical Education, Re ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have solid teaching and tutoring experience in both classroom and a one on one scenario. I taught English for a private academy in South Korea to children ages K-12 and also tutored adults one on one. After completing my contract in South Korea I returned to graduate school in order to earn a master’s degree in Business Administration at Ohio University. I choose Ohio as they offered me a half scholarship, due to my writing ability, and the opportunity to work in the Professional Writing Center for the College of Business. At this position I was able to tutor college age students, foreign and domestic, to improve their English writing ability.
I enjoy teaching students of all ages. My teaching style is very simple; I set goals and expectations upon meeting the parents and then set sub goals with the students that are achievable but challenging. I believe in teaching the stu ... read more

More About This Tutor...

While completing my BS in engineering, I spent two years tutoring math, physics, and optics. During my senior year I was also able to teach a portion of two terms of the freshman optics class. During the last four years I have worked as an aerospace engineer, and as a private contractor. Although these weren't teaching positions, I believe that these experiences have given me unique opportunities to share my knowledge and will be helpful to me in the future for teaching and tutoring.
What strikes me most as I look back at my education is how much of an impact a teacher can have when they make their subject relevant to their students. When I am teaching I try to find out what motivates each student as a person, in addition to what is motivating them to take the class. My goal is to find a way to present the material in such a way that the experience of learning is a journey of ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I am a recent graduate of the University of Washington with a BS in Chemistry. I also have a strong background in math and biology. Aside from my educational background, I have experience as an educator: from June 2007 to February 2008 I worked for a private language school in Prague, Czech Republic as an English language teacher.
I try to avoid giving students an answer immediately, but rather try to pry the answer out of them with questions so that they can figure out the answer themselves. I see teaching as helping/forcing the student to think things out and make discoveries for themselves, not just being spoon-fed information. Of course, sometimes it is necessary to tell students the answer if all else fails (after all, it is important that learning is not a frustrating activity for the student), and rote memorization can be a valuable tool every now and then. Growing up bilingual, I was always fascinated by language and grammar. After being admitted into a highly selectively liberal arts college, I dedicated myself to the study of French, Spanish and English literature, graduating with several honors. I had always enjoyed helping my friends with their Spanish assignments, so during my studies I found a job first as a Writing Assistant at the Academic Support Center, and then as a French and Spanish Teaching Assistant. After graduating, I continued my study of language and teaching by moving to France to teach English at a public high school.
I believe that when you are teaching, you shouldn't simply teaching a subject, you need to teach how to learn. I don't want to hand my students a list of rules, vocabulary and answers to memorize. I want to work through different problems with them, helping them find and understand a larger scheme, ... read more
