Teaching with compassion for the learner is my style of teaching. Making students understand their abilities and not dwell on any weaknesses are important for learning. I take ESL students at their level and help them make progress that is relevant to their lives.

I have over 10 years in tutoring elementary and high school students. I started tutoring in 2000 with the YMCA's after-school program. I stayed there for six years before taking a break to finish college. In summer 2009, I started tutoring with the Boys & Girls Club in Montevallo. Also in summer 2009, I started tutoring high school students from Bibb, Chilton, & Shelby counties through the Upward Bound program at the University of Montevallo. I began tutoring when I was a Jr. in high school. I tutored a variety of subjects for grades 5 through 8 during my last two years of high school. During my freshman year of college I tutored a classmate in English Composition I. More recently I tutored a college freshman in Algebra and some of my peers for continuing education credits in Algebra. I have a total of 3 years tutoring experience and an additional 2 years experience from home schooling my daughter for 2nd and 3rd grade.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that learning needs to be fun, but that students need, and most of the time want, structure in their classrooms. I believe that learning needs to be relevant to students. They need to know why and where in their lives they will need or be using what they are being taught. I use a variety of instuctional methods while teaching (lecture, discussions,group activities, etc.) so students stay interested and because every student learns differently. During high school, my teacher requested that I help others in my class and I realized how much I loved helping others understand how accounting works. Also in helping my children with their school work, I have learned that each child is different and learns in different ways. I would describe my style of teaching as finding out how a particular student learns best and work form that foundation. Some learn better by seeing an example and then working it out on their own with someone to consult if they get stuck. Other learn better with what they hear and others what they read.
