At your pace, on your level

I adjust to the student/learner as I am told or discover their learning preferences. However, in my experience and research, I have noticed that active learning and discovery-based learning are arguably most effective mechanisms for knowledge retention. Therefore, I make considerable efforts to implement these styles into my teaching.
I have always been passionate about communications and teaching. I began tutoring mathematics in High School and during my undergraduate schooling I mentored and tutored introductory university level physics, calculus, chemistry, and organic chemistry. I am currently in graduate school at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine studying Molecular Biology and Genomics but remain informally interested in mathematics and physics.

My experience is principally in marine research. In such, I have taught at three universities. Most recently I have been giving scheduled seminars for several years. I am semi-retired. My science background is mult-disciplinary. I enjoy most teaching ecology (both marine and terrestrial), geology, biology, physics, and chemistry. I have worked in this field on the west coast for twenty years, and about fifteen on the east coast. My principal fields of work have been geo-physics, and population ecology. Most of my recent work has been in Chesapeake Bay.
I am energetic and involved. I am a strong believer in the use of visual and other aids. I feel the best teaching can occur when it is interactive. I am highly computer literate, and regularly interject this medium.

I would say that my teaching style is very interactive. Anyone can give instructions but I love feedback from a one on one situation as well as a group environment. I base alot of my instruction on analogies; when a person can relate an experience or another word to a term being tought, their understanding is broadened and 99% of the time embedded in the longterm memory. That to me is not only developing the ability to draw on a built up knowledge base, but also broadens ones ability to convey what has been learned.
I have always wanted to teach. When I was a child I would round up the kids in my neighborhood and make them do lessons that I created. I do remember they did not like that. I went to college and earned a BS in Biology always knowing that I would eventually teach the sciences. I was an excellent student and have always found pride in myself on my ability to communi ... read more

I have gained a solid understanding of many disciplines of math and science through my study of Physics. I have honed my writing and general English skills through the writing of laboratory reports, essays, and the completion of a thesis project. I have more than six years of experience tutoring students in math, science, history, and English.
I try to guide the student to find a personal understanding of the concept. It is one thing to explain a point of difficulty to the student, but it is preferable for the student to be led to an intuitive understanding. It is my goal in teaching to facilitate the student in finding this type of understanding.

A Little Bit About Me...

The most important qualities of outstanding educators are experience, creativity, and patience. Each quality needs to be developed or tested by time in order to increase in its overall effectiveness. Teachers who can consistently employ all three qualities throughout their careers will be successful educators. It will take a lot of effort and hard work as an educator to successfully integrate the qualities of experience, creativity, and patience into their teaching styles. The effort and hard work will result in the development and establishment of those important qualities within teachers. In turn, the qualities will help those outstanding teachers to continue working hard with unquestionable effort.
Through the course load of my college career my studies also incorporated normal life span development, personality development, abnormal development, prevention, group behavior, ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

In my experience with teaching, I find that the best way to connect and convey the information is to provide aural, visual and experiential exposure to the material. Everyone does not learn at the same pace or through the same exposure to material. It is also important to be perceptive to the possibility of student frustration as this is almost always a road block that will arise and if not identified can lead to lower absorption of the material or complete lack of understanding and drive altogether.
As a re-founding member and President of the Syracuse University chapter of the National Society of Pershing Rifles (www.pershingriflessociety.org) I was responsible for the planning and instruction of between 12 and 20 students in the areas of Leadership, Project Management, Exhibition Drill and Wilderness Survival. My style is to focus on the reason for a reaction so you can extrapolate what will happen with materials your have not seen before. This was the technique used when I took graduate level organic courses at Maryland.
While an undergraduate at Maryland I tutored students and helped my friends in chemistry and math. When I went to Graduate School I taught lab and two discussion sections, making sure the students understood the lecture material from the Professor. I have knowledge in general chemistry as well as extensive knowledge of Organic Chemistry. I tutored my daughter by helping her understand the underlying reasons for a reaction vs. just memorizing a huge list of organic reactions.

I enjoy working with students in small groups, or one-on-one, I believe that in order to help a student succeed in a subject matter in is first necessary to show him/her a real life application of the skill set you are teaching. If you are teaching successive addition or subtractions, the use of a checkbook, and mock purchases, will allow the student to see the value of learning the skill as opposed to simply thinking of it as one more "rote task" she/he must learn to get a passing grade.
I have tutored and mentored in the Seaford School District for 4+ years under the Junior Achievement Program and have worked more informally with my three children and their friends in Math and Science. I have organized and produced "Mr. Science" shows for PTA functions and taught math concepts through the use of Color to show the benefit of learning both Cartesian and Polar coordinates in a fu ... read more

I have three years of experience teaching at the high school level, including chemistry, physics, and physical science. I have also worked in the pharmaceuticals industry, where I learned much about the practical use of chemistry.
My teaching style is constructivist, meaning it all depends on the learner. Every learner has a different style, and I try to match that style. The important thing to me is that at the end of the day, the learner has truly learned and understands the concepts at hand.

Upon my master's degree in Chemistry, I started to mentor technicians and chemists on wet chemistry techniques and testing. From mentoring and my father's persistency, I started to teach college chemistry (general) 3 semesters ago. It has been very rewarding teaching someone chemistry when they are really afraid of the subject What I try to accomplish is that chemistry is everywhere and is used in your everyday life - when I teach, I bring examples of everyday life and practices into account to help the student relate to should occur naturally in learning something.
I love teaching chemistry and science classes - I am very patient in teaching and attempt to relate the subject to everyday occurences. I believe that all can learn if given the opportunity and drive - people are afraid of the sciences because of the unknown - I bring the unknown to a common place. I love ... read more
