A Little Bit About Me...

I have a very relaxed style of teaching. Not so relaxed that there is not order in the classroom, but a style designed to put students at ease and to put them into a mood for learning. I encourage participation, active participation in class, and I encourage questions. I seek to explain so that students understand perfectly, and I will not give up until I am convinced that all have a grasp of the subject that I am teaching.
I have taught all subjects mentioned for a period of over 25 years, both in the United States and Japan. I received a teacher award in Japan for excellence in teaching. My own previous students endorse me as a good, or even great, teacher. As for subjects, I prepared teachers in international schools to teach AP Latin. I taught TOEFL at more than one level to college students in Japan who were seeking to study in the United States as well.

I have been teaching math and reading for 20 years. I am currently an instructional coach in a high school, where I work exclusively with teachers to help them provide instruction that will ensure success for every student in the classroom. I am certified to teach math, reading, and elementary school. My emphasis in my current role is helping teachers differentiate instruction based in student needs.
My teaching style is one of direct. explicit instruction that targets the student's needs to help him/her move to the next level. It is important that we teach not only skills - what we want students to learn, but also strategies - how the student can successfully demonstrate the skill. By focusing on the processes that the student needs to think through complex problems in any content area, we are helping students build their knowledge base and be ready for the challenges of the ... read more

I love children and helping find different ways for them to learn. I believe all children are capable of learning and I know that different approaches work better for different children. All children can benefit from spending one-on-one time with a tutor. I would love to be an asset in a child's life and learning.
While studying elementary education at UNCG, part of my requirements were to complete a semester interning in an elementary school setting under the supervision of a teacher. I did this for one semester for about 12 hours a week in a first grade classroom. My mother is a special education teacher for an elementary school and I have helped her in the classroom in the past, as well. Also, upon completing my degree in American History, many research papers and essays were completed. I have extensive experience with research and have learned many different techni ... read more

I have been teaching since 1990. I spent one year teaching English and Women's Studies at a private high school. At the college and high school level, I have taught dance which includes writing about dance, dance history, arts administration classes and theory classes. I also have extensive experience teaching and tutoring ESL students in the US and abroad.
I view teaching not only as an extension of my creative work, but also as a continuation of my research of composition and performance. A good teacher is like a skilled composer, arranging and presenting ideas, crafting and shaping an environment where a student can best be challenged, and learn to challenge themselves. I teach in much the same way as I improvise; I bring to each class, indeed each student, an openness, compassion and commitment to the present moment. I am charismatic and inspire a joy and excitement about ... read more

I am supportive and empathetic while setting high standards and pushing the student to do his/her best. My passion is literature; however, I realize that grammar seems to be the most challenging area of the humanities for students. I understand that many have trouble tackling this subject and try to be as patient and compassionate as possible.
My experience began the summer after my freshman year of college. I worked as an intern in an academic camp that ran for six weeks. My responsibilities included assisting teachers in the classroom, living in the hall with the students, and supervising afternoon activities. I found the experience to be greatly rewarding and continued to work for the program for the next four summers. During this time, I served as Head Intern, the instructor of mythology and creative writing, and Assistant Director of the program. I was also hired at the s ... read more

Growing up in a bilingual and bicultural household has given me a great understanding of and appreciation for the Spanish language. After studying Spanish as an undergraduate, I continued my educational pursuits and obtained a master’s degree in Spanish with an emphasis on linguistics from Middlebury College. During the academic year I spent in Madrid, I enriched my educational foundation while gaining a greater understanding of second language acquisition and effective language teaching methods. In addition, I have completed an add-on teaching licensure in English as a Second Language Education (K-12). That course of study provided me with a thorough understanding of language teaching practices and theory. In addition to my academic preparation, I have worked as a Spanish teacher and tutor at the primary, secondary, and postsecondary levels. I have also volunteered with children and adu ... read more
