My comments on tutoring Genetics : I took this course during my undergraduate studies at UCSD, receiving an A in the course.

First, I begin by answering any questions a student has about the material they are learning. Once all questions are answered, I usually like to engage students in active learning by providing a worksheet for them in order to test where a students strengths/weaknesses are in regards to particular subject. Lastly, I usually finish off with review of important concepts about the material (especially concepts that students have the most difficulty with) in hopes to clarify the concepts/ideas of the subject.

While at the community college, I administered practice test for students in MESA in mathematics (Calculus 1,2,3, and 4) while also working the maximum of 20 hours a week in the campus math lab (walk-in tutoring). Furthermore, I attended and graduated from UCLA with a bachelor's degree in physics and a minor in mathematics and finished the necessary coursework to apply to all medical school programs in to the country. My approach to tutoring is that all students want to learn, even if they act otherwise. It is my job to make the subject more relevant, interesting and understandable for them. I assume everyone is capable of learning the material and try different ways of introducing and reinforcing information until it sinks in. I believe parents have a hard enough job, and it is sometimes best for someone else to tackle school subjects where the kids are not thriving. Kids often benefit from a fresh perspective and if their self-esteem is at all suffering from difficulties at school, having a new person involved in their lives can help them feel more confident again.
