My most recent experience was as apreschool teacher. Despite the fact that the children were all the same age, whatever developmental or cognitive delays a child might have, is not being addressed, therefore making the teaching environment, very stressful. Prior to the preschool classes, I taught as a substitute in the school district where I attended college. To this day, I am involved in my newphews schoolwork, and help him to write book reports and research papers. That is my specialty area. I am currently back in the Reading area after completing two years with Teach For America on Chicago's Southside. While there, I taught 9th Grade English/Test Prep and 6th Grade writing, which I loved! Two years ago, I graduated from Barnard College, which is the undergraduate women's college of Columbia University in New York. During my time in New York, I tutored many young children in English/writing and French conversation and grammar.Because of my content area, my tutoring strengths are English, writing, test-prep and grammar work. I tend to employ a quiet but direct approach to learning. Q and A sessions begin each session. We review the homework and past experiences of the student. I encourage students to write down their concerns and mark the areas of confusion at the time these arise. That way the students don't forget to bring them to my attention. I like to break down large projects into smaller components. The success of the student is the primary goal. A feeling of accomplishment is a close second. I back step and reteach as necessary.
