Tutor with Real Life Experience

I have always approached a teaching lesson as a learning opportunity. Learning is a fundamental skill. If you don't have your basic fundamentals, your student will have difficulty advancing. So, I always start with basic fundamentals such as; note taking, study skills, and comprehension! All sciences demand the ability to link concepts together. Ex. cells make up tissues, tissues make up organs, organs make up organ systems,etc.....! By understanding the make-up of cellular structures and relating that to tissue functions the students can fully understand a subject. This proves true with all subjects. By impowering the student with good base fundamentals, my students find it easier to link concepts together.

I teach either one on one or in groups with the same subject, depending on how many students I get.
I have been taking classes at Daytona State for 1 semester, but like my credentials said, I have gotten awards through them from my Middle School, and high school. I have been tutoring since 2003. My comments on tutoring GED : I graduated high-school with a 5.1 GPA (AP courses raise average), and I have previously tutored a friend earning his GED.

Although I have never tutored professionally, I have had extensive experience tutoring friends and family in need. I am experienced in tutoring young children as well as classroom peers at my level. I have two bachelor degrees from UCF, Bio-medical Science and Psychology, and I feel confident in my ability to help anyone learn. I'm looking to earn extra money while completing my Master's degree at UCF.

A Little Bit About Me...

It is extremely important in the growing process of any student to be able to be independent and use the skills that they have learned. A Chinese proverb once said, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” When you mentor and tutor a student and help them along their way, it is necessary to teach them vital lessons and skills. The student will be able to use these necessary skills later in life and in their future professions. It is imperative at some point to let the student spread their wings and to be able to soar for themselves. Once the student realizes that they can now be self sufficient, this is when the student will become confident in themselves and in their work. They will now be able to feel more confident in doing task that they thought before would be unfeasible. As a tutor it’s important that once this relationshi ... read more

I like to have the students actively participating in the lessons. They enjoy working out the lesson examples and problems on the media that is used so all of the class can see the successes and where we need more work and explanation. Hands on work is very valuable such as working with graphing calculators. The students enjoy manipulatives and technology where they can make their own discoveries. Math and the graphing calculator have become one in the same, so I use them constantly in the classroom.
I have been teaching for seven years-mostly math and some language arts. The math teaching included geometry, algebra 1, algebra 2, basic high school math and middle school math. One year my students had the highest improvement in standardized math test scores in the district, for the lower level students. My student test scores have always been high so I retained the scores. What is my teaching style? My teaching style varies as to the students I am working with. Every child is unique in his/her own way. Children learn differently and it is up to us as teachers to investigate how do they learn best. This way, we can better serve the needs of ALL our students. A child can be a Visual, Auditory, Tactile/Kinesthetic learner, and/or a Musical learner. What is my teaching style? I teach according to the needs of my student. I believe that every child has the potential to succeed! As teachers, we need to accommodate to their learning styles because not every child learns the same way. Students should not be accommodating to ours!

I am a teacher/instructor by nature. I do not believe there is but one method to solve any problem. I make every attempt to relate the use and application of math to the students’ real world environments and situations. I believe in the demonstration/performance method of instruction: explanation, demonstration, student performance and evaluation. My students are very aware that my goal is their success. The following is an extraction from a letter written on my behalf by a colleague: “I frequently teach students who have taken prerequisite math courses from Marc, and those students are always very well prepared and do very well. I respect his ability to adapt, innovate and succeed in the classroom. Beyond the classroom, Marc holds informal study sessions with students, generously giving his time to help students succeed. I believe in multiple intelligences and thus, I see that students always have the potential to succeed through many different ways. And by tapping his/her learning style, a good teacher will definitely be able to help him grow and grasp as much knowledge as he wishes to achieve. I consider myself a patient and open minded educator; creative and resourceful so as not to look only on the sole box of a four-sided classroom as the only tool to learn. With imagination and constructivism, education would be very fulfilling to any individual who seeks to learn.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love tutoring one-on-one, and my experience has proven that this kind of academic attention can help every student succeed. I enjoy discovering which learning method works best for each individual student, and then helping that student make the most of his or her study time. One of my goals when I tutor is to make sure that each student knows how talented and smart they are, even in the subjects that may be difficult for them right now. Over the years, I have enjoyed watching many of the students I have tutored succeed and with that success, comes great confidence for the future.
