When I was teaching beginner-level German to an adult opera singer, I focused on helping her develop her conversational skills and pronunciation, using English to explain difficult concepts. By contrast, when teaching a beginner-level 12-year-old, I used a total German language immersion approach and built on my student's love of creative writing by asking her to write her own endings to traditional German short stories. Coming from a poor background I was very much determined to change my family economic situation. The key to a good teaching style is creativity and adaptability. It is the job of the teacher to adjust his teaching style to fit the needs of the student. Some students respond well to visual cues; such as drawings in the case of teaching English as a Second Language. Since then, I have continuously sought opportunities to teach outside of my daily school and work life. As an undergraduate at Middlebury College, I volunteered to teach beginning German at a local elementary school.
