I believe every student has their own style of learing. I am very much a visual learner and utilize this style. Many students, though, are tactile learners and/or find their attention is kept using computers. I love discovering what type of learner each child is. I like to always be positive and instill in my students that they can accomplish anything we just have to work together and discover their "niche". Seeing a child grow and succeed is my greatest reward.
I have earned a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work and have worked extensively with and for children including a Case Manager at Clay County Behavioral. I have always wanted to be a teacher so earned my Teaching Certification through St. John's River Community College in ESE and Pre-K through 3rd Grade. I have been a teacher's assistant at Wilkinson Elementary in the Trainable/Profoundly Handicapped class and am now in ... read more

My comments on tutoring Florida Writes : I am currently tutoring students in preparatiion for Florida Writes.

I have always been a teacher. I taught swimming when I was 14 and French to fifth graders when I was in high school. I love working in education. I believe that all people, young and old, can learn and reach their potential. My teaching style is calm and patient. I have a good sense of humor and am creative. However, I have high expectations for my students and for myself. I find joy in learning and believe that teaching allows me to share this joy.
I have been a teacher for 40 years. I retired because family care-giving required my full attention. My studies prepared me to teach and my experience prepared me to meet the needs of each student. I am experienced in all areas of Language Arts; reading, writing, grammar and literature as well as elementary math, history, psychology and the arts. I can help students with the organizational and learning skills that are import ... read more

Experienced Tutor

I enjoy teaching and working with children. While I believe that all children can learn, they do so in their own ways and at their own pace. It is the tutor’s responsibility to ensure that the student(s) understand the material. It is important to show students how one idea builds on the last. I will help your child learn the material in his/her own way. I consider myself to be patient, non-judgmental, and knowledgeable of the subject matter. I truly believe all children can meet their potential if they are given the appropriate surroundings and learning experiences. I am very proud of the kind letters of thanks that I have received from parents of some of my students this year.
As an engineer and I have taught planners and engineers how to use software to do calculations. I have taught GRE preparation for Kaplan (analytical and verbal reasoning) both to small classes of 3 to 7 ... read more

Honors High School Graduate with experience in teaching

My lessons can range from private lessons to group lessons of no more than five at one time. I prefer to be very involved in my students' progress, and will readily explain any questions that they do not understand. My main strategy is basically to lay out the concepts that will be covered that day, go over several practice problems, and give three or four practice problems for the students to work on independently. For art students, I will demonstrate with explanation the concept that we will be covering in that lesson (be it portraiture basics or still life basics), draw diagrams with the steps clearly labeled, and have the student independently work on a similar piece which applies the same concepts. I will supervise the student's progress and correct any lasting errors, but I prefer to have the students produce an almost entirely independently produced piece each session.

Extremely patient, cool tutor wanting to help you

Extremely patient, but organized. Teach students how to be organized, how to properly prepare for tests and to be able to recall information when needed.
Seven years of experience as a case manager with Healthy Families, where we helped teach families for to be better parents and to become self-sufficient. Besides being extremely organized, I am very patient and try to reach everyone on whatever level they are currently on. I don't just shove a bunch of information at you and hope you get it. Instead, I build on what strengths you already have, and show you how to use your unique, individual learning style when I am tutoring you. My strengths have always been writing, spelling, and all things related to Language Arts/English Comp. Also, I have always been pretty successful at test taking and study techniques.

More About This Tutor...

I have been a stay-at-home mother of three children for the past 22 years. When my children were young, I regularly volunteered in their classroom, worked on the PTA and taught Sunday School. I also volunteered on a regular basis at Rosie's Place, a homeless shelter for women in Boston, MA and also at the Transition House, a shelter for battered women and children in Cambridge, MA.
I love working with children and am convinced that if young students get the attention they need as their skills are developing, they will have much more success in school in the years to come. I believe that the experience I've had working with my own children will help me be able to reach out to struggling students that are assigned to me. I know that each child has his own learning style, and I am patient and would work hard to help that child achieve success.

More About This Tutor...

I started my teaching career in 1976. I taught 3rd grade for 3 years in an urban school setting (Jacksonville, FL). During this time, I completed my coursework for my master's degree in Early Childhood. I taught Kindergarten for 5 years, moving to 2nd grade for another 5 years. I then became a Primary Resource Specialist working with teachers in grades K-3, assessing students, and writing class plans. I completed my certification in Ed Leadership and became a principal of an elementary school which was an ESOL center and a center for special needs children.
I love watching children discover on their own. As educators we need to understand that children are naturally excited about learning and want the opportunity to investigate and explore. I also feel that literacy is the cornerstone of learning. Giving students experiences increases vocabulary as well as creating background knowl ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I absolutely believe that each person learns differently. Some children learn better by sight, others by sound. A good educator is one who is able to provide both types of learning to the child and thereafter pickup on what allows the child to learn the best.
While in undergrad I volunteered with a program at my school where underprivileged children would come in and have a mentor. As a mentor we would help them with homework, take them out for a trip, or just have someone to talk and ask questions to.

I graduated in 2008 from Indiana University--Purdue University Indianapolis. I have earned two bachelor degrees: BA in Psychology and BA in Philosophy. I like to describe my studies in philosophy as an extended exercise in reading texts; a degree in philosophy is like a specialized degree in reading and writing. For two years during college, I also worked as a reading tutor in the Indianapolis inner-city schools. Currently, I work as a substitute teacher in Duval County Schools.
Philosophically speaking, I am convinced that education helps to fulfill our nature; it allows us to lead richer, fuller lives and thus complements the soul. I take a very conversational approach to teaching so that I can become aware of my students' needs and abilities. I am a huge proponent of discipline and repetition, but I nevertheless aim to make learning an exciting experience. Many students find tha ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love watching students finally 'get it', when that light clicks on and they begin to understand how letters fit together to form words, or understand a math concept. I feel it is my job as a teacher to find the way that a student learns best, and develop activities or lessons that go along with that. Each student is unique with different educational gifts or struggles. It is my job to do all I can to encourage and challenge them.
This is my tenth year teaching full time. I started teaching in Korea and discovered I loved it. While there I decided to seek my Master's Degree in TESOL. After 5 wonderful years in Korea, I returned to the states and worked as a resource teacher in North Carolina. I am now a kindergarten teacher here in Jacksonville, and am in my dream job. I have class of students who have a first language other than English, and it is a delight to watch them ... read more
