My comments on tutoring Chess : i have been playing chess all my life. I have been in 4 chess clubs through out elementary, middle, and high school. IN 6th grade, I competed against the whole middle school, and came in first place, landing my name on a plaque still in the school. recently i have not been competing much, just leisurely playing for fun

i am just a twenty year old college student, Who has learned a lot in this world, and looking to pass it on to whomever it might effect. Very caring, musical, and a great people person. I have mostly learned all my people skills when i was a waiter at T.G.I. Fridays, and that combined with my love of learning brings me to this tutor position
I have always been a hands on learner, so that is mostly the way i portray my lessons, by doing, instead of readin. However i also see the need in having to sit down and Get to work, because some thing are better learned on paper

I was more of an instructor than a teacher. I was a day camp counselor at Solway House parent/child resort in Saugerties N.Y. I instructed kids how to swim, dive, play various sports and gave dancing lessons to the guests. As a high school student I tutored 7th and 8th graders in an after school community center. I was one of a few staff at the University of Connecticut to instruct graduates and staff in the use of the various electronic facilites available to them.
I feel children are very self-aware and are very vulnerable to positive and negative feedback. Therefore, no matter how little progress is made, praise them. I first began tutoring under the direction of Nancy Donohue-Berthiaume at Quinsigamond College. I turored in Introductory Accounting, basic and college level mathematics. In my Sophmore symester, I was presented with a challenge. A young man who was both Dislexic, and Mathlexic was failing basic mathematics. In less then 1/2 hour, I was able to help him go from failing grades to straight A's. Later, I tutored fellow students in Pre-Calculus while taking the course myself. I ended up with a 4.0 GPA in that class. As a teacher, it is easy to take for granted certain assumptions and prior knowledge that a student may lack. Each student brings a unique approach and starting point to the learning experience. The teacher's job is to find that starting point and lead the student from there to a place of deeper understanding and knowledge.
