I generally teach through visual aids and through very thorough explanations. If the student doesn't understand the first time I explain something, I will explain it in a different way and will keep explaining it in different ways until he/she fully understands what's being taught. I try my hardest to teach by explaining concepts logically and showing WHY and HOW, rather than simply saying something is what it is "just because."
I have always been an honors student and am currently taking the highest levels of math (AP Calculus) and spanish (Spanish 5) at my high school. I am involved in Peer Mentors at my school and have tutored multiple students in a variety of subjects. I have also tutored students outside of school, mostly in math. I love teaching others and helping them to understand concepts that they previously were struggling with. I am very patient and will work my hardest ... read more

Calculus II is one of my top subjects! I took the AP Calculus BC exam in tenth grade and received fives on both the main portion of the exam and the AB subsection. I have taken Calculus III (multivariable calculus) at UNCC and received an A in the class. I have also done extensive extracurricular studying of calculus.

I gained my first tutoring experience by explaining difficult concepts to classmates that were struggling. I have been a tutor on WyzAnt for about half a year now. I have tutored math and physics students both at the high school and college level. All of the students that I worked with rated my lessons positively.
From my tutoring experience I have noticed that most students who have trouble understanding a difficult concept do so because they did not understand a more basic prerequisite concept, so I try to help students "fill in the gaps." When working with students, I work through a few problems with them, and then I have them do a few problems on their own to see if they understand. If I see that the student does not understand some prerequisite concepts required to solve the problems, I make sure to have them understand those concepts before continuing with the current problem ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Our children today need to be encouraged and given the opportunity to develop. Some students aren't able to get the attention they need in a classroom setting with all of the other students. All they may need is one on one time to help explain the concept in a way they understand. I'm a very "hands on" tutor and like developing fun, creative ways for the students to learn. I am attentive, encouraging, patient, and considerate and will be available to help the children succeed. My goal is to make a positive difference in each students life.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE River City High School, Sacramento CA Algebra teacher 08/08/2005-12/18/2005 Teacher Assistant Math department UCDavis 09/30/2003 – 08/05/2005 TA for classes Calculus 16A, 16B, 16C and 21A, 21B, 21C (groups and individual consultations)
About my role as a teacher, I think that the main principle should be “teaching for understanding”. A teacher creates learning opportunities that engage students in thinking about important mathematical concepts. Facts and skills support such learning but are not the ultimate goal. A teacher not only draws on past knowledge of mathematics but continuously builds on and refines that knowledge during meaningful interactions with students and colleagues. Thus, her or his practice as a teacher is constantly evolving

"Every student has the potential to succeed. Every new year presents challenges and new possibilities for success. Having a positive outlook and attitude along with a sense of humor in everyday situations allows me to provide students with room to be creative and independent and to make each class more enjoyable. I strive to raise the bar because I know that each student can achieve the level of expectation that is realistic for him or her, thus developing a confidence tool that creates a safe, positive learning environment. If students are given coursework that stretches them without paralyzing them, they will approach new assignments with more enthusiasm. Having a flexible attitude is important for my students' assurance that they are in a positively managed classrooom. Students will succeed because of their efforts." This experience gave me good time management skills and also gave me unique opportunities to help my fellow teammates on their math homework while away on meets. My senior year I began tutoring officially through the athletic department, where I still tutor occasionally. I have tutored multiple students in Computer Science, and basic Statistics courses. I feel my strong point is in calculus; however I feel confident within many areas of college and high school mathematics.
I have recently begun my pursuit of a Masters in Teaching (MAT). I believe my studies thus far have well prepared me and helped form the teaching strategies I have today. In public school, the key to teaching success is the ability to motivate students to try their best by learning as much about each individual student as possible and keeping their attention. One of my classroom rules for students is to participate in everything we do. I keep my students engaged for the full ninety minutes through varied activities and try to change activities every twenty minutes. My goal with each lesson is to provide students with multiple opportunities to learn concepts and use varied assessment tools each day.

A Little Bit About Me...

To help students understand material I find out exactly what material they do not understand and explain it to them in the simplest way. I show students examples to help them understand material, and I let them work so that I can follow their progress.
My tutoring experience has mostly been in elementary math. I feel that the experience working one-on-one with these young students has helped me to be able to also assist students that are struggling in high school chemistry. I could also help them with assignments and prepare for upcoming test.

My teaching technique strictly focuses on the task at hand mainly for proper concentration. I value and encourage student questions because it demonstrates my knowledge and expertise about the material being taught. I do not tolerate immature and irresponsible behavior from a student because it hinders a student's progress when he/she is unwilling to listen or seriously apply my teaching towards the objectives he/she want to accomplish. I take into consideration a student's level of understanding for the material being taught and teach him/her accordingly. I believe that because of my experience with various types of mathematical content, I am confident students will reap the most advantageous benefits of my teaching!

A Little Bit About Me...

I have earned a PhD in Chemical Engineering and completed 20 hours toward a MA in Teaching. In response to a desperate need for math teachers in urban schools, I completed an alternative certification program offered through Chicago Public Schools and National Louis University while teaching high school math. Through my education I have gained an extensive knowledge of Math, Chemistry and Physics and advanced Engineering concepts. I have also been trained in SAT and ACT test preparation, so I am very familiar with grammar, reading comprehension and strong essay writing techniques. Over the last 15 years, I have tutored students ranging from Jr. High through college in all these areas.
