A Little Bit About Me...

I've been told I have a great capacity for making complex ideas more understandable. This is why students seeking Math help at my University would ask for me specifically, I can take a complicated concept and explain it in a way that makes it seem much simpler, and when one approach doesn't work, I go again from a different direction. My goal is always to make the student understand the process and reasoning, not just memorize a method. I am approachable and patient, and I can adapt to any learning style. I have been very successful at adapting my teaching style to fit the age and subject that I am teaching. I am easily able to gain students respect and attention, which has also made me a very useful substitute.
After I received my degree in Elementary Education, I was a substitute teacher in IA for one year. I then worked, taught and advised at a small private college in Iowa. I have also owned and operated a daycare in my home for over three years. Currently have have spent the past two years as a substitute teacher for the Buffalo, MN school district. This is a job I love for the simple fact that I have variety everyday. It is also a great way to stay up to date on all subject matter. I grew up in a household that valued education and creative learning. As a result, I have always been driven to do my very best in all subject areas. I officially started tutoring in 2002, at Southwest Minnesota State University. My initial subjects were Algebra and Finite Math. While pursuing my B.A., I worked in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages as an assistant to a French professor who also served as chair of the department. In a one-on-one teaching situation, I like to begin with a needs assessment followed by setting up an individualized learning plan with student and parental input. This would include specified milestones and learning objectives. I am patient and organized, and I like to incorporate a variety of teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles. Learning another language can be fun and rewarding given the right circumstances.
Following five years of teaching high school Spanish, I continued teaching others by volunteering as an English as a Second Language tutor and later transitioning into corporate learning and development where I now design and deliver customized training to adults. I've continued to use Spanish as our daughter attended a Spanish Immersion elementary school, during which time we hosted three teaching assistants from Latin America.
