American Sign Language Mentor/Tutor

I think it is always important to learn what the client wants from the tutoring experience and go from there. For potential interpreters I have developed several linguistic building exercises and other challenging material. For parents of Deaf children I can help lead you to resources as well as language advancements. Deaf culture is a huge part of learning American Sign Language so social events and interaction with Deaf people is something I would include as part of my tutoring. Sign Language is one of my top subjects! I have grown up with a sibling who is Deaf and always used sign language to communicate and I have been an Interpreter for more than 15 years and was NAD IV certfified in 2000. In addition, I have an ESSE V certification.

I have worked nearly two decades in the educational system as a Sign Language Interpreter. I have experience with K-12, Community College, and University levels. I worked as Mentor for a K-12 school district with 13 Mentees for five years. Because of the new state law, the Mentee's goal was to become certified to continue with employment. 10 out of the 13 Mentee's succeeded in compliance with the state law.

I have earned a bachelor degree in Communicative Disorders with emphasis in Speech & Language Pathology, Audiology, and Deaf Education. With this background I have an understanding of various modes of learning. I have learned unique ways to teach grammar and vocabulary important for reading and writing.
