A Little Bit About Me...

I received my BS in Accounting 1988. While getting my degree I was involved in the on campus tutoring program. I have tutored students in, accounting mathematics, philosophy, marketing, business law, finance, and religion. Since graduating from college I have had several training opportunities in various jobs. These jobs have given me a wide range of experience in training (tutoring) a wide range of people with various levels of education, and their ability to grasp the information required for the job. I have passion for teaching others what I have learned. My work experience and education have given me a great deal of knowledge and I want to pass that along to others that may benefit from it.

I have been a full-time (and quite busy) professional tutor for the past five years. I currently work as an independent tutor through The Tutor Connection and Wyzant, as well as my personal tutoring service. While living in California in 2007, I was employed by the San Diego Board of Education as a tutor for the AVID program, a group style tutoring initiative to assist high school students with difficulties and increase their motivation to learn. Upon my return to Knoxville, before becoming a full-time private tutor, I tutored U.T. student athletes as an employee of the University of Tennessee. My specialty is reading, writing and research. I have a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas, where I studied government, law and economics. I believe most students can learn or solve any problem by talking it through, which is often easier and more effective than simply trying to think it through silently. I'm a very laid back casual sort of fellow that likes to make someone think about how to solve problems efficiently. I won't just blurt out an answer to a question hoping they pick up, hands on working through a problem is the best way I've found to solve computer problems. Teaching the student "where" to look to find answers is big help too, there is reference material out on the web for ANY business related task you can think of.
I have 20+ years of real world business IT experience. Most of that was programming on IBM iSeries/AS400 mini computers in RPG or COBOL. The last 6 or 7 years has been devoted to learning HTML & PHP in my spare time. The languages aren't important, what is key is learning to break complex tasks down into smaller chunks and think logically about how to link all these smaller tasks into a program to accomplish the overall goal.
