I do this by breaking down the confusing topic into smaller and simpler sub-topics and showing how these sub-topics build into the final subject they are trying to comprehend. This gives me the opportunity to identify possible gaps in their knowledge and to fill in those gaps. I also try to relate covered material to historical events.
