A Little Bit About Me...

I have always helped people with their homework, particularly in when it comes to English and elementary math. I worked for wyzant.com for four months, where I tutored a little girl in Spanish and it was really fun, but ultimately she had too much on her plate so I stopped. A year later the father of the girl I tutored before asked me to come back, but by then I had a full-time job and school. Now I would like to go back to tutoring because its something I enjoy and I am also good at it.
I like to make learning fun by teaching according to what my students like. For instance, with the little girl I tutored, I knew that she was a visual learner and that she loved art and music so I gave her a mnemonic device in a form a song she liked to help her remember verb conjugations. Recognizing as does William Glasser that students perform and learn in school only when their “basic needs” are met, students need a structured environment to allow them to focus on learning, but the central goal of schools is to provide students with intellectual tools to understand the physical and social worlds around them. Standards must be related to the lives of students so that they can become intrinsically motivated. Standards must be packaged and encapsulated as “essential ideas” to make them meaningful and accessible. Curriculum needs to be made exciting and relevant so that intrinsically motivated student can make it their own, and rigorous and challenging so that students are motivated and empowered to learn.

American History is one of my top subjects! One of my degree's cognate areas was Political Science & History. In addition, I enjoy the subject & have studied it independently.

I like to figure out what a student really wants to know & why he/she has this desire. Then, I like to know how best they learn. We all take in information differently. For example, it's easy for me to retain info related to social studies, history, artwork & details about writing a good narrative. This IS NOT true for me when dealing with science subjects. So, when I endeavored to get the BEST grade that I could when taking a requisite science course in college, I had to spend 3Xs as much effort in my studies. (I got an 89%.) This reminded me that I can do my best & get good results. It also reminded wherein my intellectual strengths lie.
