I am a recent graduate of Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania (May 2011). I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a concentration in creative writing. I also have a minor in photography. During my time at Mercyhurst College, I worked as a writing tutor in the school’s writing center. When students entered the center, it was my job to immediately make them feel comfortable by greeting them with a friendly smile and asking what I could help them with. A Little Bit About Me...

As a Bowling Green State University student who has studied Communication Disorders I have come across many experiences with children. Communication Disorders not only includes speech, but language as well. I have gained knowledge about how children read and write and why some children may have problems with this. During my last semester of college I observed 25 hours of speech and language therpay which involved watching both adults and children. This year I will be graduating with a 3.0 in my major. I believe in trying to help kids learn the big picture. Kids are highly intelligent and are capable of handling large amounts of information. This does not mean that we teach the same amount of accounting information to 5th grades as we do 11th grades. Just that we can give them a general outline for the 5th grades and a more detailed version for the 11th grades. I believe that the more knowledge and understanding we have just gives us a better understanding of how things work.

Young people learn through different ways and means. I try to discern the best method to instruct any particular student with whom I am tutoring at the time. I like to give examples of problems, and "problem solve" with the student through illustrative examples on paper or on the board. I encourage questions and feedback to ensure that the young person is indeed learning "how" to solve a problem, not simply to "get" a solution. I was a tutor while in college. I tutored students in History, Accounting, and Greek. I was a double major:Accounting and Christian Ministry. I was a substitute teacher in Indiana from 1990-1994. I taught everything from Kindergarden to High School. I was a couple of teacher's personal sub. I also was involved with the program that dealt with students with developmental disabilites. Currently, I am homeschooling my daughter. She is very gifted, so we are letting her interests lead us. She is the hardest one I have ever taught, but that is because I am so close to her.
