My teaching career started as an elementary school teacher. I've been teaching for 11 years now. I've also taught adult education for six years at Terrebonne Parish Juvenile Detention Center. Throughout my teaching career,I've also worked as a mental health professional. I admired working as a mental health professional,because it helped me to understand and relate to my students better. A person who has strong negative feelings about learning is automatically hindered in any learning environment. I first gain the trust of my students, and then start to build an appreciation for learning in their minds. Once that process has begun, I inject a sense of humor, a sense of patience, and a great deal of love into my teaching. I have been a classroom teacher for over 20 years. I have taught all subjects in elementary school, English, history, and mathematics in middle school, and English composition and literature in high school. Additionally, I have taught mass communication and creative writing in high school. I have taught remedial English, freshman composition, and technical writing on a collegiate level. I have taught both college and AP High School for college credit in the areas of Humainties, Religious Studies and English composition at three different institutions. Though I do well in large classroom settings, I prefer more personalized instruction settings. I think I would make an excellent tutor in the areas of English Composition and Literature and World History on both the high school and college level, and would likely do quite well to tutor high school French. My teaching style is friendly and approachable. I find putting a student at ease in the beginning allows them to open up to me in order for us to both find out how he or she learns best, especially since I feel learning styles vary for each individual and often differs for some subjects. For example, I may want to use pictures and art to explore history versus reading and lecture type presentations.
