A Little Bit About Me...

I have been involved in various aspects of teaching and tutoring for the past 14 years. I have tutored students one-on-one for reading, writing, and math, and have taught private music lessons for voice (since 2005), violin (since 2005), and piano (since 2004). I have worked for one school year as a substitute for both Hanover County and Louisa County, I am Currently employed by Hanover County Public Schools as a teaching assistant while continuing my work on my graduate work. I will still be employed by hanover County Schools for the 2009-2010 School year.
I work well as a one on one special education aide because my attention is soley on the activities and education of my students. I am a laid back worker, and extremely patient because I find that if I allow myself to get out of shape, then I am not an effective teacher and aide, and my students will see this. My father was my first math mentor. He graduated from West Point - and tutored his roommate John Saxon. John developed the Saxon method. The next influencer was Investigations - the math program used at West School in New Canaan, CT where I did my student teaching. That program taught me to do "break apart" math - which teaches math independence. I have done more substitute teaching at all grade levels - and often play "Mental Math" with white boards -which the kids love. They work in teams and get the adrenaline rush of beating the clock and the teacher. This methodology - has worked really well for AD&D kids.
Teach it. Repeat it. Practice It. Discuss it. What went right? WHat went wrong? What did they learn. Egg Cartons and White boards are my favorite manipulatives. Often mistakes are the best teachers.
