I have mentored various people since 2000, in all types of subjects, including math, science, social sciences, English, writing, literature, and other related subjects. My academic record is very strong, and I believe empowering those I work with every single time. The only pre-requisites are that you have to be willing to learn, and learn how to learn.
I like to use the Socratic method, mainly by asking questions and challenging assumptions. In addition, I like to engage those I teach, challenging them to think about what they previously have not considered. I believe in building on successes, and offering constructive criticism, where appropriate.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy working with students to help them understand biology and how they participate in a biological world. I believe that the most important concept in teaching is engagement with the student. I strive to engage students in biology by exploring how biological concepts relate to the students life. Genetic diseases, growth and development, and the environment are biological topics that students already participate in; and I strive to teach by relating these topics to the student’s own life.
For the last two years I have taught college level biology labs. These have been introductory biology classes with course material beginning with cell biology and ending with ecology. In 2010 I received the Outstanding Teaching Assistant award form the biology department. My experiences are in both biology and environmental science.

My educational emphasis was in plant ecology, which provided me with experience in botany, geology, and ecology. Furthermore, I specialized in statistical analysis of biological data. I have extensive computing skills in programs ranging from MS Office to statistical programs including R, SAS, Minitab, and JMP. During my time in the university system, I tutored students in biology, chemistry, ecology, and philosophy.
During my graduate career, I taught six semesters of biology to non-science majors. I have wanted to work with kids all my life. I love the way that they learn and think, and how different it is from adults. I studied Biology at Warren Wilson College in hopes of becoming a high school biology teacher. While at college, I did over one hundred hours of service tutoring and mentoring high school and middle school students in Buncombe County. Since graduating in 2009, I decided to take a break from school, and figure out where I wanted to go in life. I have been working at a local after school for elementary aged kids.
