I am a believer in the socratic method. As an Avid tutor we were taught to employ this method to help students understand concepts. I think that it is better to ask questions, and guide students' thinking rather than just giving them the answer, or telling them how to do a problem. Simply telling someone how to do something or giving them the answer prevents that person from figuring it out for his or herself. If the student can figure it out for themselves they will achieve a much better level of understanding.

I have a very solid math background, so I know what concepts students should be learning at their age/level. Therefore, if the students don't have material prepared that they would like to study with me, I can quickly compose exercises for them to do. I ask a lot of questions and try to get the students to figure out the solutions themselves. When they get stuck I give subtle hints until the light bulb goes off. I often explain a concept and then have students watch me solve a problem, then have them do one themselves. Since graduating from MIT with a degree in Math, I have worked at the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, MA and Siemens AG in Munich, Germany.
