I hate lecturing! I do! This is why my tutoring style is very interactive. I don't like talking AT a person, I prefer to have a conversation. My goal as a tutor is to make subjects interesting, and also to make sure they stick- so you can do well on exams. I also teach study skills in every session, so ideally you won't have to rely on me forever. I have experience being an English tutor to four different families during my time abroad in Barcelona. My students varied in age, the youngest being seven and the oldest being 13. This experience allowed me to better understand students at all different levels and what teaching methods children at different ages better respond to. Having grown up in Costa Rica attending a bilingual school, I am fully fluent in English and Spanish, and tutored language learners often in high school and college. I received my B.S. in Biology from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where I was involved in the Science Education club, and assisted in several university and state-funded after-school programs for middle school students. I worked as a career counselor for 16 years. I was able to be a tutor for 6 years during this period. During those 6 years, I worked with high school students and tutured them in basic math. This period was very rewarding. Seeing the students go from third or fourth grade level of math to seventh or eigth grade level of math was a natural high for this students. This accomplishment made the students believe more in themselves,in what they can do and it opened more doors for a better future in thier personal lives.
