Making biology fun

I received my PhD. in the Biological Sciences from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee in 1997. I then went to Wayne State University (Detroit, MI) for my postdoctoral fellowship where I worked with developing transgenic mice. In 1999 I took another postdoctoral position at Rush Medical Center in Chicago at the Dept. of Ob/GYN where I did studies with the human papilloma virus (HPV) as well as ovarian cancer and programmed cell death. After my postoctoral experience, I accepted a position at Abbott laboratories where I worked with the immunobead assays for HTLV and chagas disease. I joined the Army Reserve medical service corps at the time, and in this way heard about a possible position for a microbiologist opening at the Illinois Dept. of Public Health (IDPH). I have a Bachelors in English from Dominican University. I began A Plus Master Tutoring Center over 4 years ago and was teaching in my home. Now we have expanded to a center in Oak Park and we tutor all ages, from Pre-K to adults. Our subjects range from phonics to algebra. Our teaching styles vary from a 3:1 ratio, which would include up to three students and one tutor, or a 1:1 ratio which would be a private session with a student and a tutor. I am not young enough to know everything

I agree with the concept that each person learns a bit differently, and even more so that as a tutor, I should try and find the most effective style for my tutee. My academic career also taught me the importance of setting time limits for each action item; and switching tasks to keep the mind sharp.
