My comments on tutoring College Algebra : 92% in Class B average across all test with an A on final. Taken Fall 2012

My name is Kevin Guevara and have been a college student for 3 years now, and am pursing a career in Electronics, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering. Just obtained my Associates Degree in Math & Science. 3.18 combined GPA in College, 3.34 Transferable GPA. I plan on attending Cal Poly Pomona, CSU Fullerton, or UC Riverside next fall 2016.
I like to explain and show the student how to complete a problem. I do this 2 more time with different questions and then proceed to see if the student understands how to complete it on his/her own. I am open to most styles of teaching if a preferred style is requested.

Exciting and effective tutoring available!

I am able to effectively teach a group of kids, and I am also comfortable with the one on one teaching style. Regardless of the environment, I know how to make sure the needs of every student is met.
I have always had the ability to effectively teach my family, peers, and other classmates. However, I recently decided to get into the field of tutoring. My very first session, I fell in love with it. I am understanding that each student has different needs, different strengths and weaknesses. It is my job to reward those strengths, figure out those weaknesses and strengthen them. I am a young lady myself, but I know that the youth is our future. If I am able to have an impact on at least one student and their educational endeavors, I am pleased. Education is the key that will unlock the doors to the future of our youth.

My comments on tutoring College Algebra : College algebra is really ALgebra I & II. There should be no stress about this subject if the student knows algebra I & II.

I think the easiest teaching style is to show students how every concept relates. How it relates to other subjects previously learned, why it relates to the real world and why should it relate to school.
I believe my experience falls directly on the amount of effort I have put into the subjects. Coming from another country ad having a lack of communication due to an absence of knowledge of the English language, I have battled my way through school. I have had to put the time and effort into every subject I learned and will not hesitate to share that knowledge with any other student. My experience and abilities are demonstrated really by my efforts and quantity of knowledge of the subjects.

A Little Bit About Me...

Learning goes much deeper than memorizing then eventually forgetting. Learning comes from conceptual understanding of material, building one concept on top of another. I believe that every student has the capacity to learn anything, given they have the basic fundamentals. I prefer to teach using a Socratic method approach, (a means of learning in which the student figures out concepts on their own, with the simple aid of questions). If I do notice a student does not understand a concept in the way I am describing, I try to provide a different means to convey the message. I use various teaching styles that coincide with different learning styles, i.e. tactile, auditory, and visual learning styles, and can use each effectively.

I use Socratic questioning strategies and experiential learning to ensure that students understand why a concept applies rather than just memorizing formulas. I use manipulatives and visual aids to ensure that multiple modalities are integrated. I work with the whole student as a person, identifying how the student learns and teaching the student how to adapt various teaching styles to his/her learning style.
I have 9 years of experience teaching high school; all courses - AP Calculus, pre-calculus, algebra 2, geometry, algebra, pre-algebra (including special needs and english learners), and practical applications. Over the last 20 years, I have tutored students in all of the above subjects as well as elementary math concepts, writing strategies, and reading recovery. I am NCLB certified and focused on the defined national & state standards of each subject.

I have been tutoring for over ten years. The subjects range from basic elementary math to college level calculus. I am also fluent in Spanish and have tutored students in basic speech and literature.
In all my years of experience the tool that has proven the most effective is engaging the student in the lesson. In doing so, the student retains more information and I get a better idea of what the student is having difficulty with. Hence, I am able to be a more effective tutor.

My teaching style is “whatever it takes” to help your child become successful. If your child is a hands-on type child, we will work with manipulatives. If your child works best through physical activity, I will find ways to reach him/her kinesthetically. If your child is a visual learner, I will have him/her do activities which stimulate his/her visual senses. In other words, my teaching style is adaptable to your child’s learning style. I will discover what works best for your child and work on ways to reach him/her. I believe that under the right circumstances, any child is capable of learning. I challenge myself in finding ways to help children learn, and I enjoy every minute of it.

My familiar expertise in tutoring has been with middle school and high school students. My teaching style changes with every different student because everyone learns at their own pace and style. Making my student feel comfortable in a work environment is very important to me. I am very enthusiastic and believe that with hard work and dedication, together that tutor and student is able to achieve success. I look forward to teaching and learning along with my students to have a greater understanding of knowledge that education presents to us. Thank-you.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy seeing children discover the world around them in their own ways. Therefore, I teach the importance of working things out until you understand it for yourself. Children will meet and often surpass any goal that is given to them if you show that you believe in them. I use a hands-on approach, as much as possible, with a problem-solving emphasis. I firmly believe that a child remembers things more if he is able to work it out for himself. As a result, I take more of a mentoring position the older the child is. It was in this way that my daughter received both an AA and an AS degree the night she received her high school diploma.
I began teaching at Hesperia Christian in 1995. First, I substituted and then taught part-time, two to four subjects a year: Advanced Math and Drama, 5 years; Biology, 1 year; and Advanced Drama, 3 years. When my son started seventh grade, I b ... read more
