Making A Difference

In May 2012, I received my bachelors degree in English with a Literature Emphasis and a minor in Writing. I graduated with a 3.6 g.p.a. (Cum Laude Honors.) Throughout college, I took various education courses that focused on educational philosophy and physiology, elementary and secondary concentrations, and students with disabilities. I was able to obtain 36 education credits and in 2009, I was admitted into the school of education at my university where I was able to engage in student teachings, researchers, and observations. In 2011, I participated in the student outreach program where I would visit elementary, middle, and high schools to tutor them in English, Math, or Science and guide them through the learning process. Certified Teacher Looking To Help Others As A Tutor

I have a wide variety of educational experience and have recently crossed over into the realm of education as a Special Education/At-Risk teacher with the Edgerton School District. My current position has me utilizing differentiated instruction and modification techniques with nearly 50 students throughout the day which will enhance my ability to tutor others who need help. My particular areas of expertise are Social Studies, Spanish, English and ASVAB/GED test prep. I am weaker in Math and Science.
I prefer to have materials prepared prior to any tutoring session so communication ahead of time will be essential. If I have an idea of what is expected of me then I am able to help modify the session to fit the learner. I like to use both direct teach as well as discussion to help guide the tutoring session.

A Little Bit About Me...

Throughout high school and college I volunteered at a local summer theater workshop for children. In this program I started out as a teen counselor and moved on to be an adult helper and play director. Also, I worked for a summer as a camp counselor for the Freeport Youth Summer Program where I led children in games and some educational programming. In college I acted as an informal tutor and study buddy to classmates.
I enjoy working with children and always have. I feel my teaching style is more in the Socratic method in that I like to ask them questions until they come to the answer themselves because I feel that increases the retention rate of the subject. Additionally, I like to take the concepts that are being taught and give them real world applications and examples to make the learning more relevant.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am best in a one-on-one environment and can acclimate to most personalities. I love learning and care very much about passing that on. I attempt to find each student's "barrier" to learning and customize my approach. I am especially good in the math subjects.
With my undergraduate degree in hand I taught Marketing and Sales at Whiteside Area Vocational Center in Sterling, IL, for eight years. I left teaching to enter the corporate world working for several companies, i.e., National Manufacturing Company in Sterling, Amerock Corporation in Rockford, and Greenlee-Textron in Rockford. I moved from a product manager to national account manager. Following my corporate experience I returned to tutoring students, K-12, in Princeton, IL, in math up through geometry, and specializing in tutoring students who could not go to school either due to an accident or illness.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love watching and learning from children. I believe that learning is closely related to confidence. I like to take the time to get to know children and understand what they like so that I can better understand how their brain works and how they process information. In understanding what they like, this gives me the ability to let them show me something new. The best way that I retained information in college was to teach someone else what I was studying. As the children learn the new information, I like to have them show me the new information the same way they did their hobby or interest.

Teaching is my passion and my life. There is no other career that I would desire to teach. I am a very firm, but fair teacher. My teaching styles vary depending on the lesson being taught. Hands on activities are very important to me, and I will incorportate them into the lesson as often as possible. Technology is also very important to me. I have a lot of experience with the Elmo, overheads, projectors, and other programs associated with Microsoft. Parental involvement is very important to me as well, and I try very hard to build great rapport with parents, and will keep them involved in their child's education.

As a graduate of Sacred Heart Classical Center, I have taught Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra II since I left the school in the Spring 2009. My goal is to teach a student. This includes presenting material in a way he or she can assimilate it. If the student does not understand the information I present, then I try my best to show him or her practical, real life examples of how to accomplish the task at hand.

I love using different styles of teaching to see which way each individual learns best. I believe all students are capable of learning the same curriculum, but may need to be shown or approached in different ways. Some students may need a hands-on approach and some may gain more knowledge through their books. Which ever way they are gaining the most from is what I will focus on. I am excited to use my skills and experience to help educate our future.
