A Little Bit About Me...

I believe the best way for students to learn is by doing and discovering the material hands on as oppose to being lectured to. I like to instruct demonstrate the learning material to my students intially, but after that i prefer to have my students try the material themselves so they can see and understand what aspects of the material they dont understand. That helps me pinpoint what i need to focus on as far as helping them with a particular area of miscomprehension. I strongly believe in learning by doing instead of learning by seeing. I am fully aware that everyone learns in their own way so i am flexible in my teaching methods.

With my bachelor degree in Civil Engineering, I have developed a strong understanding and comprehension of math and science. I have tutored my younger brother in physics while he was in high school and three years ago as a Resident Assistant on a floor specifically for engineering student, I have helped my residents with their college level physics and some calculus classes. As a student I enjoyed most the teachers who facilitated learning. Teachers who lead students on a road of discovery as they learned, who taught me how to think and not what to think. I model my teaching after the same style I enjoyed as a student. Helping a student discover for themselves the material not only educates them but fosters a passion for the subject at hand. Rote memory has it's place and is essential, but when a student becomes passionate about a subject, then the door is open for them to excel at it. I have found the best way to learn material is to relate it to real life. Material that is abstract doesn't last long and is poorly retained. Organic chemistry is my specialty but I can teach general chemistry also. Patience is also a virtue!

As a graduate of Marquette University with a degree in biology, I have had an extensive amount of education. I have mentored and turored high school students through Upward Bound at Marquette, I was a teen coach teaching leadership skills through Urban Underground and have tutored personally biology, math, and reading subjects along with study skills. I love working with children I find it important that children enjoy learning.
It is very important that children enjoy learning at an early age. I like to give children the opportunity to be hands on and use as many learning supplies as possible from note cards to games. Learning comes with time so it is important to be patient and let the child understand they are important along with motivating them. I graduated from UW Oshkosh with a BS degree in Elementary Education and English. I have been a teacher for 18 years. I have taught all subjects to PreK, second and third grades. I have also worked with At risk high school students. I am currently a professional caregiver and activity aide in a group home with individuals who have physical and cognitive disabilities.

A teacher can be extremely knowledgable, but the student must be enabled to learn through motivation and having the material accessible/understandable.
