I entered Virginia Tech as an honors math and physics student and graduated in three years with my BS in physics. At the moment I am trying to decide if I would like to go to grad school to continue on to something else, hopefully with math and physic as at least peripherally relevant. I have never taught a class and have tutored in only in a limited capacity. I however was apart of Virginia Tech's first Physics education class and program and found that I really actually enjoy teaching for teaching's sake. I hope that my limited experience won't scare people away; I am very passionate about these subjects and I would enjoy building up my experience and resume so that I can become an even better educator.
My major complaint with the current pedagogy of STEM fields is there focus on teaching students to be able to produce answers so a slew of canned and frankly uninteresting pro ... read more

My greatest strengths in teaching have always been in small group and one-on-one settings. I stress language arts in every subject that I teach because language is the window through which we examine every other subject. I also stress thinking skills and will very rarely "spoon-feed" students information. I prefer to ask probing questions which will help students to discover knowledge and meaning for themselves. In mathematics, I prefer to stress the practical applications of skills as well as multiple processes for reaching conclusions. I believe that everyone thinks a little differently and procedures that work for one student may not work so well for others, so it is important to offer multiple ways of accomplishing the same goal.

The greatest contribution to children and youth is to help them get a good education. I love seeing students grasp new concepts and grow in their understanding of math and science. There are many different needs in the classroom and I believe I have a deep understanding of those needs and the ability to meet each one. The latest research shows that there a multiple ways students learn and I have been applying these in teaching to best reach each student at his/her level and interest. A Little Bit About Me...

The subjects that I have taught/tutored I find interesting and therefore are enjoyable to me. I try to convey my interest in the material to the student(s) that I am involved with. I have found success when the student begins to like the subject matter and any aversions he/she may have had start to fade. When working with the student, I also make sure that he/she gets involved immediately and works on their own instead of watching me perform. That way, the student retains more and can complete work at the most important times, during exams, when I am not present.
I have had a broad range of working and academic experiences. I graduated from Florida Atlantic University in 2002 with a degree in Computer Information Systems. Excellent with children, I can adjust my teaching style with the personality of the child. No child learns the same, so it is important to create a learning plan that builds trust and respect between the child and tutor. I have found my greatest attribute is the ability to make learning fun and “cool.” I am passionate about teaching. If the children you teach can sense your passion for the subject, they will absorb that energy and want to excel. I also consider myself very patient - frustration has a very negative effect when trying to create a positive learning environment. Finally, I believe in creating a benchmark style constructional curriculum. I strive to instill the same love for learning my teachers gave me. Learning is for life.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style varies according to the type of student. I have tutored at-risk students with attention and behavioral issues. With these types of students, they are indifferent about math, and I have to get them excited and interested by a rewards system. I get these students involved by putting the chalk in the student’s hand and have them explain the material to me, rather than lecturing to them, which results in their daydreaming. If they succeed, they get rewarded. With students who are willing to learn but are having difficulty understanding the material, I am persistent and supportive. I break complex materials down into pieces and work step by step so that students can reach their full potential.

I love to tutor and work with students of all ages. Every student has their own learning style that must be found to help the student efficiently and substantially. I want to provide the best education possible by learning about the student and finding the best way to display topics to them. Every student already possesses the potential to succeed in any academic field; they just need great teachers, good study partners, great learning environments, and many learning experiences. I try to present material in a fashion that will hold the students interest and I also like to use visual aids. Learning must be made fun for the student for them to absorb the greatest amount of knowledge that they can!

One of my gifts with working with children has always been the ability to relate well with them. I know what motivates children and have always shown patience and understanding. I have always tried to have children learn while having fun and try to give them multiple experiences because not all children learn in the same way.
I have my professional certification in Elementary K-6 and Physical Education K-12. I recently taught Kindergarten and I have more than 30 years experience working with children of all ages.
