More About This Tutor...

I entered Virginia Tech as an honors math and physics student and graduated in three years with my BS in physics. At the moment I am trying to decide if I would like to go to grad school to continue on to something else, hopefully with math and physic as at least peripherally relevant. I have never taught a class and have tutored in only in a limited capacity. I however was apart of Virginia Tech's first Physics education class and program and found that I really actually enjoy teaching for teaching's sake. I hope that my limited experience won't scare people away; I am very passionate about these subjects and I would enjoy building up my experience and resume so that I can become an even better educator.
My major complaint with the current pedagogy of STEM fields is there focus on teaching students to be able to produce answers so a slew of canned and frankly uninteresting pro ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My greatest strengths in teaching have always been in small group and one-on-one settings. I stress language arts in every subject that I teach because language is the window through which we examine every other subject. I also stress thinking skills and will very rarely "spoon-feed" students information. I prefer to ask probing questions which will help students to discover knowledge and meaning for themselves. In mathematics, I prefer to stress the practical applications of skills as well as multiple processes for reaching conclusions. I believe that everyone thinks a little differently and procedures that work for one student may not work so well for others, so it is important to offer multiple ways of accomplishing the same goal.
I got my first degree in English Education because of my love of literature and my desire to share that love with students. At the time I gradua ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style varies according to the type of student. I have tutored at-risk students with attention and behavioral issues. With these types of students, they are indifferent about math, and I have to get them excited and interested by a rewards system. I get these students involved by putting the chalk in the student’s hand and have them explain the material to me, rather than lecturing to them, which results in their daydreaming. If they succeed, they get rewarded. With students who are willing to learn but are having difficulty understanding the material, I am persistent and supportive. I break complex materials down into pieces and work step by step so that students can reach their full potential.
I recently graduated with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Georgia Tech. At Tech, I volunteered three hours per week to tutor SAT's to immigrant ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

10 years experience training space operators for US Navy and US Air Force. Training includes orbital mechanics, space operations, and computer operations. Education includes 10 semesters of calculus, differential equations, and other higher math. Other education includes physics, geometry, trig, electronics, mechanical engineering. Happy to help in any of these areas.
I like to start with where the student feels comfortable, then go from there. I do not dictate, but listen and understand first, then try to explain in a style the student likes. I am happy to get into other areas learning if the student or parent wishes.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have had a broad range of working and academic experiences. I graduated from Florida Atlantic University in 2002 with a degree in Computer Information Systems. Upon graduation I moved back to the Philadelphia area and began working as a software engineer. After a few years and an intense personal experience, I went back to school at Rutgers U. – Camden and finished up post-bacc pre-med requirements and gained admittance to medical school. I worked over 2 years in the Rutgers U. – Camden Dept of Physics as a T.A. and research technician. I teach recitation, lecture sometimes, and I tutor the General Physics subject matter. I do, in fact, enjoy the philosophy and mathematics of physics and find teaching/tutoring both rewarding and challenging.
The subjects that I have taught/tutored I find interesting and therefore are enjoyable to me. I try to convey my interest in the mate ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with children because the impact that you can have on their lives can make such a significant difference in determining their futures. Every child learns differently and unfortunately not every child’s learning needs can be met in the classroom environment. I feel that with a little extra time and effort a child's scholastic performance can be greatly improved. Determining a child's strengths and weaknesses when it comes to learning along with identifying the learning styles that they are receptive to (i.e. auditory, visual, etc.) is an important step in providing the appropriate tutoring experience for that individual. I believe that an education is one of the keys to a fulfilling and successful life that I think every child deserves this opportunity.

I have been a teacher/professor and Dean of a University for 15 years. I got my BS in Life Sciences and one year of MS in Molecular Genetics. I continued on to get my MBA. I have taught English, Math, Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Terminology, Business courses and other science courses.
There are so many different teaching styles and learning styles. As a tutor the teaching style is going to be dependent on the student's learning style. Not everyone can teach. As a Dean, I had to interview many potential instructors. I believe that a teacher needs to be caring, compassionate and encourage students at all times. I have these qualities and my students can vouch for that.
