My comments on tutoring GED : I am a College Professor (History, Philosophy, Ethics, English) with many years of tutoring experience. I have helped many students to pass teh GED exam (including both my daughters). I am patient and understanding. I have been teaching basic skills (reading, writing, oral communication) for 30 years.
In my experience, the majority of students are highly motivated. This is, for me, the key to success. However, very often, students require assistance with a wide range of ‘remediation’ in many of life’s basic competencies: a skill set that includes such issues as time management, test taking, study habits, and, sometimes, acculturation. My teaching methodology follows these simple steps:
Step 1: Motivation
Step 2: Definition & Understanding of terms
Step 3: Explanation, exploration, discussion, debate
Step 4: Questions & Answers
Step 5: Practice: Time & Effort
Step 6: Demonstration (or proof)
