The roles of the teacher and student are one in the same. I go into teaching knowing that I am not the end all shepherd of information but I am going to give all I can at being as clear, concise, informative, and objective.
My first teaching experience was in high school teaching at after school programs about basic economic principles that may apply to kids. That was my first time understanding that I have potential to assist others in grasping topics. I firmly believe that a good education must be adaptable, flexible, and incorporate a variety of learning styles if it is to be of maximum benefit to students. When teaching, I speak with my students about the kinds of activities they feel assist them most in retaining information as well as observing their learning style independently. I do my best to include activities that incorporate visual, kinesthetic, and oral learners. School isn’t always fun and interesting; it is called “work” for a reason. I earned a Bachelors degree in accounting, with clusters in Finance and Spanish. I have work experience in auditing, tax and financial analysis. Currently I am working on an MBA, and plan to begin a doctoral program in 2011 as I prepare to become an accounting professor. I worked as a youth counselor for three summers, teaching teenagers from age 14-18. I love teaching, which is why I have chosen to teach accounting as a career.
Anyone can learn any skill that they are willing to work at. I personally prefer to learn by doing, so that is also how I teach. When a student works through examples, discussing how concepts apply, that application of the concept helps to solidify the knowledge. I am patient when teaching, and I believe that a relaxed environment is best for learning. Communication is the key to both teaching and learning.
