A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is focused on student achievement. Many parents complain that their child does poorly on tests. This is often a result of inadequate teaching practices which fail to recognize individual learning differences in students. My goal in teaching is to individualize the learning process for each student, so that the student understands and retains knowledge and is able to explain what they learned. This process increases their test scores and confidence. Students often require that educational materials be modified or accommodated to meet their particular needs. My experience in special education has shown that all students can achieve if knowledge is properly presented and goals well defined.

I am currently tuoring at an Academic Development Center and Student Support Services as a psychology and math tutor. I love sharing my knowledge with others and at the same time, I learn and gain alot from my students. When students come in with questions, I will first ask them what subject is it for, does the teacher give out any guidelines about the assignment, and what difficulties you have with this assignment. If it is math problem, I'll do serveral problems step-by-step with my students. Then, I'll pick a problem that was similiar to the problem that we just worked with, and ask them to do it. If they still have problems, I'll show the steps again one more time until they get it.

My teaching strategy can be summed up in two words: encouragement and enthusiasm. I believe that once I have given a student the tools to succeed, he or she can do so - with enough encouragement. My students at Indiana University have all noted on their course evaluations that my encouraging and positive attitude has helped them improve their reading and writing skills. I also believe that in a tutor, enthusiasm for the subject matter is key. I am incredibly enthusiastic about reading, writing, and grammar, among other things; I know that I pass this enthusiasm on to my students. I believe teaching is the golden experience. It’s a way you can spread your knowledge to the children that can lead them to a higher level in their careers.
