A Little Bit About Me...

I have been signing for over 20 years. I am not certified because I chose not to be. I prefer working with adults that are deaf/blind. Im an employment specialist, so i am also skilled in teaching and training people. I love sign and working in this population. My husband is deaf and my children (11 & 6) are signers. Sign Language is one of my top subjects! I am a certified (NIC) American Sign Language interpreter. I have been actively involved and working within the Deaf community for about 10 years.

For the past seven years I have worked full time as a job coach at Lexington Center for the Deaf Vocational Services Center in Jackson Heights, NY. I also volunteered in their Independent Living Center for two years prior to my employment with them. In 2010 I was a private tutor for a neighborhood adolescent, teaching him basic sign language to better help him communicate with his family, as he is unable to use his voice. I have also spent time volunteering at the Helen Keller National Center for DeafBlind Individuals, where I received training to become a certified Supported Service Provider (SSP). Occasionally I also work with the New York Parent Network to provide interpretation for their various workshops and events. I also volunteer often with New York Deaf Theater, as I also have a strong background in and love for theater.

My style is open to discussion. I like to ask questions to the student about the knowledge they have and based on that, apply my knowledge to build a strong base to be used as a core to solve more problems. I live the one on one interaction but also love the group discussion. I used to tutor an entire classroom during summer for 6 hours straight.
I started around 2005 tutoring for the departments of chemistry and math in Queensborough Community College, from the basic levels in organic chemistry 2 and calculus.
