My teaching style is based on reading then reviewing. At that point in time ask questions to see if the student has grasped the information being given. If not, answer questions then clarify. When reviewing information it is important to make sure the student knows reasoning behind subject matter so that they are understanding logic and not just memorizing information. In subjects that invloves math such as probability, chemistry, or statistics, I would do a few examples followed by letting the tutee working a few problems.

In my 2nd year of teaching, I have enjoyed the experiences that have came my way due to my students. I enjoy going to work daily and leave almost everyday with a sense of gratification because of the accomplishments I help my students achieve. I currently teach 4th grade and feel this grade level has helped me fine tune my writing skills due to the demanding pressure placed on my students to pass the 4th grade writing test. I feel that I am already a good teacher, but know I can be better. Therefore, I will be starting my master’s degree in the summer of 2006 in hopes to become a more effective teacher.

Teaching social studies for so many years has allowed me to implement a great variety of teaching strategies, such as graphic organizers, cooperative learning, note-taking guides, debates, Socratic seminars, gallery walks, dramatic presentations, roundtable writing, independent studies, multi-media presentations, etc. As a middle school teacher, I learned quickly how to relate subject areas to the everyday lives of middle-schoolers. I am able to create assignments to cater to all of the multiple intelligences. I have an ability to break down abstract concepts in ways an early adolescent can understand. I strive for excellence in teaching, and I expect the same from my students, regardless of background. Most of all, I have discovered that it is true that students "don't care what you know until they know that you care."

A Little Bit About Me...

Every child has the ability to learn, and every child should have the opportunity to learn. An important component of teaching is helping a child find success, and thus building confidence that he/she can learn and do well. It is vitally important that a child have a good relationship with and respect for his/her teacher, and just as important that the teacher have respect for his/her student, and that a teacher appreciate and understand the many different ways children learn.

I love teaching and it is in my blood. My father taught for 39 years in Philadelphia public schools and my Grandmother and brother were and are teachers. I would describe my style as energetic, fun and creative. I know that different students learn in different ways. Sometimes a rhyme helps with memorization or an analogy helps you understand a concept.I take a vested interest in getting to know all my students and what works for them.I firmly believe that they do not care what you know til they know that you care.I believe teachers most important job is to teach students how to learn. If you can help them develop that skill they will be much more effective students.

As someone with a passion for the learning process and an excitement for learning, I believe that I exude this excitement when communicating information to others. In dealing with anyone, I believe it is important to communicate in a respectful manner and to make the other person feel as comfortable as possible. With children, I believe it is important that each child develop a proper knowledge base, however, I also believe it is important that the child understand how to think and understand the reason for learning particular subjects.

I have a degree in history because it fascinates me. I am a professional writer because I have a facility with language and love to create ideas with words. I am a professional editor because I have a knack for grammar and punctuation and a natural ear for written language. I have numerous publications to my credit as both writer and editor. I have tutored my two children since they were born; they are now 15 and 11. Both are honors/scholars-level students in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system. I was a volunteer teaching assistant for two years in a local, accredited Montessori school where I learned to help new readers master phonics and proceed through a series of progressively challenging texts.
