I enjoy identifying and using a broad range of materials that facilitate the learning of the students that I teach. I am familiar with many of the texts used to teach Spanish and English as a Second Language. When I first meet a student, I like to find out what materials s/he is being taught with and the subject areas that the student is weak in or is struggling with. Then, I think about how much time the student and I will have together to strengthen the student’s knowledge so that s/he will successfully bring his/her grades up in the subject areas identified. I was more of an instructor than a teacher. I was a day camp counselor at Solway House parent/child resort in Saugerties N.Y. I instructed kids how to swim, dive, play various sports and gave dancing lessons to the guests. As a high school student I tutored 7th and 8th graders in an after school community center. I was one of a few staff at the University of Connecticut to instruct graduates and staff in the use of the various electronic facilites available to them.
I feel children are very self-aware and are very vulnerable to positive and negative feedback. Therefore, no matter how little progress is made, praise them.
