My comments on tutoring Social Studies : Currently an anthropology student with a strong background in the social sciences.

I have been a student for 17 years. I am currently an anthropology undergrad who hope to become a professor. I am usually the person everyone asks for help with Homework. So i thought tutoring would be a natural fit. I enjoy helping individuals proof read. I enjoy helping students learn and find it is very rewarding to see them grow academically. Tutoring also helps me gain knowledge and experience working with students.

It is very important to me that my students have fun while they are learning. Much of my teaching is done through games and hands-on experiences. I also firmly believe in the use of technology (computers) to help teach and reinforce concepts being taught. Every child has strengths and it is important to build upon those strengths.

Throughout my education at Alfred State University I truly believe I began to understand and appreciate others and their differences. I received my second degree from Cortland State University in Early Childhood Education with Inclusion. I had the opportunity to work with many different types of children. I have taught in many areas of study. Since I was young, I taught my younger family members the importance of manners, honesty, care, and responsibility. I believe this has carried into my real-life career as a teacher. I have taught at schools such as Hope Hall in Rochester, NY and Lemoyne Elementary in Syracuse, NY. There I helped my students with their basic subject courses during their class time period. I have taught dance at Kami's Kix Dance Studio which has helped me to gain stronger classroom management skills as well as gaining a thicker patience. I am currently attending SUNY Oswego and in 2011 will graduate with a BA in Childhood Education.

If I am tutoring a young person I contact the teacher so that I can find out what areas the student needs review in. Many times the teacher will give me the resources and materials to use. Also, I like to use the guide books for each grade that are sold in stationary areas of most stores. For tutoring in reading I've found the Leapfrog Reading Program is very helpful. I like to meet my students at the library so that I can use the resources found in the library, including the computer. Many times I use educational games because are very useful tools in learning, and they are fun.

A Little Bit About Me...

While studying at SUNY ESF I held a position as a teaching assistant for Western Civilization. This involved grading exams and papers, preparing and giving lectures, and holding office hours to assist students with any questions or concerns they may have had. I also spent time volunteering to teach and after school science club through ESF Outreach for elementary / middle school aged children.
I feel as though every student will have their own niche. They will have a special subject that they enjoy the most and one that they despise. I think that figuring out how the child studies for the subject they enjoy will lead to an understanding of how to motivate that student to learn the subjects that are more difficult for them. Also, if the student's teacher stays positive and pushes him or her towards success by means of positive reinforcement they will succeed.

A Little Bit About Me...

My goal as a teacher is to help students learn and understand Math. I believe as a teacher, you want to pass onto your students to excel in whatever they want to achieve in life. I find students today are in a very competitive and stressful environment in the classroom. The pressure to succeed or be above average is great and can cause the enjoyment in learning to be lost. Mathematics is challenging, and some students pick up the concepts very easily, while others do not. It is important not to lose the students who are having difficulty. Through tutoring sessions, or help from other students in the class, the goal is for the entire classroom to succeed in mathematical learning as a team effort.

Languages, accounting and math are all about learning the rules, applying the rules and then learning new situations to use them. I try to find out how a student learns and mold my teaching to satisfy their learning style whether that is visual or graphic. I believe that everyone wants to do good work. Someone who is struggling with a subject area just hasn’t found a way to relate the subject to their background or learning style. I find ways to resonate with the student (worksheets, games/activities, etc.), find successes and then continue the learning. I am patient, caring and keep my interactions with students positive at all times. I strive to preserve the dignity of my students in all interactions.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy sharing knowledge with anyone who can benefit from my experience. I love mathematics, statistics and physics and I attempt to pass that enthusiasm to my students. I understand that there are many people who have trouble with math and science skills and becaus of that I try to explain technical concepts with easy to understand examples before submercing the student into computations that are difficult. I think that my best attribute as far as teaching goes is the ability to get the main ideas across to any student by giving each student examples that they can understand and feel empowered by their understanding.

A Little Bit About Me...

At the University at Buffalo I worked as a tutor for university students in subjects ranging from English and Spanish to biology and calculus. My BS is in biomedical sciences but I am also a proficient writer and have taken many English courses. I received an award for Outstanding English Student in high school. In addition, I worked for the WHIZard Academy for Mathematics and English in Penfield, NY as a chemistry tutor for a high school student in preparation for the regents exam. I created lesson plans and compiled practice test questions because the company did not possess the materials to properly prepare the student for the exam.
