My passion is the arts. I have explored a variety of areas including fibers, painting, drawing, 3-D, mixed media, collage, clay, graphic design, etc. Skills from all academic areas are used in the arts from math to history. An arts educaiton has been proven to increase learning in these areas and raise test scores. I was a K-8 art public education teacher for three years. While attending Bates College, I was motivated academically to achieve the best education possible. I sought out teachers who inspired me to work harder and enjoyed participating in chapel services, community service activities and participating in competitive sporting events. Children learn in different way, and have different levels of enthusiasm for different subjects. I think that the way to encourage a child's success is to identify the ways in which the students learns best, and to understand what subjects/topics interest them. If you can relate to a child, your ability to motivate them and encourage them is amplified. I like to challenge students and to encourage them to think on their own. I believe that you must approach education by meeting the student where he or she is rather having the student conform to your style. Therefore I embrace an eclectic style. Each student will present with some king of dominant learning style. They will be primarily visual, auditory, conceptual or experiential. I am a very patient listener and think that I empathize well with everyone. While student teaching I learned to pay attention to all of the students in a very diverse student body. I chose texts from a variety of backgrounds- the multicultural approach was both ideal and necessary in that setting. I then emphasized the similarities between the texts and the need for standardization in language use. One method which succeeded was my attempt to improve the students' vocabularies by breaking words into their most basic components; they learned to define words which they might not otherwise have recognized.
