While attending Bates College, I was motivated academically to achieve the best education possible. I sought out teachers who inspired me to work harder and enjoyed participating in chapel services, community service activities and participating in competitive sporting events. During school vacations, I explored jobs that followed my academic strengths. Children learn in different way, and have different levels of enthusiasm for different subjects. I think that the way to encourage a child's success is to identify the ways in which the students learns best, and to understand what subjects/topics interest them. If you can relate to a child, your ability to motivate them and encourage them is amplified. I like to challenge students and to encourage them to think on their own. I have found that most children with reading difficulties learn by reading well-written stories and by writing from their own experiences. However, they also have to have the necessary tools and knowledge to do so, and that is where phonics comes in. I believe that children should be taught through their own interests at their own individual levels, and that children should be given choices when possible so they feel in control of their own learning. Based on my experience, I believe young children learn best through games, and that even necessary drills can be taught in a fun way. As a native of Iceland I do have an accent, but I have been very successful helping native English students improve their reading. I am a very patient listener and think that I empathize well with everyone. While student teaching I learned to pay attention to all of the students in a very diverse student body. I chose texts from a variety of backgrounds- the multicultural approach was both ideal and necessary in that setting. I then emphasized the similarities between the texts and the need for standardization in language use. One method which succeeded was my attempt to improve the students' vocabularies by breaking words into their most basic components; they learned to define words which they might not otherwise have recognized.
