I can be strict but I do show empathy and try to put myself in other's situation. I don't judge I believe every child learns in thier own way but with time and patience it can be done. I find it partucularly useful to take time to get to know the student's interests so that I can relate each subject to things that the student is familiar with. Making this connection between a difficult concept and the student's personal areas of interest helps the student feel comfortable with the subject and therefore more confident thinking through each question presented. Once confidence is established, it becomes easier for students to develop an understanding of the subject area that can be applied without the tutor present. I entered Virginia Tech as an honors math and physics student and graduated in three years with my BS in physics. At the moment I am trying to decide if I would like to go to grad school to continue on to something else, hopefully with math and physic as at least peripherally relevant. My old next door neighbors have two children. One is a boy in elementary and one is a girl in middle school. I tutored the boy in reading and writing. He was able to read his first book on his own after a few weeks with me. I had to tutor the girl in math. she was taking algebra and was having a tough time with it. I'm aware that it's not a particularly high in-demand language to learn, but I am more than willing to aid in learning it if it is desired. Also, having graduated high school, I have enough knowledge to teach kids about the basics of science, math, and English. On the whole, I look for a rather creative approach when it comes to learning and studying. I ask that students be skeptical in all they hear and read, so asking questions as a form of studying will be essential. Just reading a book or looking at flash cards for studying purposes can prove to be tedious and ineffective. And putting what's learned in context is always necessary if the subject calls for any everyday application.
