As a student, I am driven to understand the nature of things. As a teacher, I work to help others understand them. From my experience, I have learned to be patient with people who are afraid of failure and to push students who are easily bored with basic work. I have earned a bachelor's degree in computer science because computers are the tool with the most potential to enable us to understand the world, second only to the mind. I have a passion for helping people, and nothing satifies me more than helping a person understand a concept and succeed in his or her class. I teach using a lot of examples and incorporating the concepts into the example problems so that the student can see how the examples are based on the concepts. I worked for over 2 years as a study session leader for various engineering courses while getting my B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. I have taught Medical Neuroanatomy to medical students at the University of Iowa Medical School. Students were directed in dissecting and identifying parts of the human brain. This occurred in small groups of five or six students. I also taught Molecular Neurobiology at Friday Harbor Laboratories to graduate students who came from around the world to take the course. This involved all parts of a laboratory class including lectures, small group discussions, and one-on-one teaching. I have also tutored numerous undergraduates in a variety of math and science areas.
My teaching style varies depending on the student. Perhaps my biggest asset is empathy as I can easily tell when a student (or group) gets it.
