A Little Bit About Me...

As a recent college graduate, I was motivated to study Physics because I find the fundamental nature of the physical world fascinating. In addition to my B.S. in Physics, I also minored in Religious Studies and this course of study has enabled me to understand and communicate with people from a variety of different backgrounds. When I wasn’t in class I spent nearly 3 years doing particle physics research for CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, which I would work at in Geneva Switzerland during the summer. During my four years at college I have tutored students from a variety of different skill levels in several different physics courses, including Classical Mechanics, Optics, Electricity and Magnetism, and the Philosophy of Physics.

I have a passion for helping people, and nothing satifies me more than helping a person understand a concept and succeed in his or her class. I teach using a lot of examples and incorporating the concepts into the example problems so that the student can see how the examples are based on the concepts. I strive to know the students well so they don't just see me as a tutor but also as a friend who is easily approachable with questions.
I worked for over 2 years as a study session leader for various engineering courses while getting my B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. My teaching style varies depending on the student. Perhaps my biggest asset is empathy as I can easily tell when a student (or group) gets it. Thus, I do not waste time telling students what they already know, and I can back up and explain in more detail when necessary. Everyone has style of teaching that is unique. Mine is at first appearance very laid back, but on closer inspection is very powerful and extremely effective in the long run. My strategy as a teacher is to study and assess a student first, then to develop a plan with the student regarding how we should approach a task or problem. A Little Bit About Me...

As a student, I am driven to understand the nature of things. As a teacher, I work to help others understand them. From my experience, I have learned to be patient with people who are afraid of failure and to push students who are easily bored with basic work. I have earned a bachelor's degree in computer science because computers are the tool with the most potential to enable us to understand the world, second only to the mind. To this end, I encourage my students to think long and hard about the problem they want to solve before they put too much work on a false lead.
