Chess is one of my top subjects! I have played chess for over a decade and a half, and have taught people of a variety of skill levels ranging from not knowing how to play to advanced strategies and thinking on your feet.

I have been tutoring for over seven years, starting with my peers in tenth grade. I have tutored a wide range of subjects, from Geometry through Calculus III, from general computer knowledge through utilizing the advanced functions of Microsoft Access. I have tutored people ranging from my peers to people three times my age, to as young as third graders. My motto has evolved into "Helping those who feel they can not be helped"
I help guide the student along, having them discover much of the information in a trial and error fashion. I tend to use the questions they are struggling with the most, making similar examples, then walking them through these problems and breaking down the problems until the student understands the how the process works.

My comments on tutoring Chess : Ive been playing chess since I was a kid.

I am a Mechanical Engineering and Geology dual major with a 3.6 GPA. I understand mathematics very well and have tutored fellow students in math and physics, successfully for years. I have a passion for learning and love when I can help others learn complex material and pass classes. I have aced College Math up through Differential Equations and Calculus 3 algebra, trigonometry and geometry are foundations of the higher mathematics and therefore I understand them extremely well. I know the basics of both electrical and mechanical engineering mathematics. For example, transient circuit analysis for electrical engineering and shear and moment diagrams for mechanical engineering. All types of sciences have always come naturally to me such as chemistry, biology, and physics and I have always done very well in science classes
I like students to understand how the material they are learn ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My approach is to establish a relationship with small talk and introductions. A parent must be present at all times. I will keep up with the child's work load in the respective subject and also be in contact with their teacher. But my inital style will be repetition, which I found to be most productive during my time in the military. However, I realize that there many different methods to teaching. I will offer as many tools or resources that are needed to assist the child in learning the subject matter. And I will search continually to find the best method for the child and subject that we will study.
My background includes 25 years in upholstery manufacturing and also honorable military experience. I have worked for many years to complete my degrees, and they are very valuable to me. My skills include computer proficiency, grammar, math, and communication. I pride myself in havin ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching style depends on the subject, the type of material, and the student’s level and ability. The goal is to inspire a student to learn the study skills necessary to excel on their own. In a tutoring situation there is usually the immediate need (to pass a test) and the long term need to be able to succeed on their own. I try to balance these two goals but the guidance of the parents is most critical. I use a combination of repetition, memorization, quizzing, recitation, and problem solving to challenge a student’s thought process so that they may grasp the material. My learning philosophy is that the most successful learning is demonstrated when the student is able to explain the material being studied.
I have worked and volunteered to teach or tutor students in academic and physical training. I understand both the desire to learn and the resistance to it having three ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I really enjoy seeing people learn new things. It has been my experience that when someone struggles to learn a new subject, the best method is to relate the subject in question to something more familiar. Patience and persistence are two very powerful tools. I believe in tutoring because it forces active participation. Once a pupil feels they can participate without fear, they can and will learn more effectively.
I am a graduate of Hamilton College, one of the top liberal arts institutions in the United States. I have a bachelor degree in history with a focus on American colonial and British imperial history which has honed both my critical reading and writing skills. A Little Bit About Me...

Since high school I've been working with my peers to help clarify subject matter, as that was my favorite method of study. In college I tutored under-classmen in Spanish, chemistry, and political science. Since graduating, I've worked with college freshmen as a writing tutor and with middle school students to teach algebra and pre-algebra. I'm a very strong writer, and I've got a broad background allowing me to tutor in any subject through freshmen year to college.
My method of teaching varies with the subject. A spanish tutor and a chemistry tutor can go about things quite differently. I like leading students to find answers on their own so that they understand the paths they are taking. That method is especially helpful in hard sciences and math. In the liberal arts (poli-sci, literature, religion, philosophy, etc.) I like to work in the Socratic method. I'll challenge the stude ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Earning a degree in Communications accelerated my skills in writing through Journalism, research papers and Rhetorical studies. Additionally, writing is something I enjoy and practice on a daily basis. It has been a number of years since I have tutored a child however, I would like to incorporate my vocational experience as well as my collegiate studies into my teaching practices.
I would love the opportunity to teach grade school children. It was during my formidable years that I can recall a young lady who impacted my education in a very significant way. Additionally, I also have very fond memories of several children who I mentored through tutoring. My innate enthusiastic nature has facilitated a strong desire with the children to participate in the learning process in many unique ways. I gain tremendous joy and satisfaction through observing this process.

About my role as a teacher, I think that the main principle should be “teaching for understanding”. A teacher creates learning opportunities that engage students in thinking about important mathematical concepts. Facts and skills support such learning but are not the ultimate goal. A teacher not only draws on past knowledge of mathematics but continuously builds on and refines that knowledge during meaningful interactions with students and colleagues. Thus, her or his practice as a teacher is constantly evolving
