I was a city planner for 5+ years, and understand GIS programs, mapping, and general geography very well. I excelled at this subject while in graduate school, as well as in my earlier studies. The teaching style that brings the best success I've found is centered on two points. First of all, it is based on listening, which means getting the student to talk.
